Jolly, Thanks. For some reason the first time that I went to the youtube channel there were only 30 videos and now there are quite a few more. I guess that I just don't know how to navigate youtube channels very well. As for his secret way of growing carrots, I saw that at another website and was thinking of trying it out. Now I will definitely try it.

If you share the carrot secret, I'll share whatever I learn about over-wintering raspberries and grapes...

I can recall prepping beds for both carrots and turnips the same way. The dirt had to be tilled over and over until it was as fine as sand, just about. The big deal with both of them was getting them spread out far enough to grow well, so some of that fine dirt was mixed in with the seeds before sowing wide on the bed with no wind blowing to scatter them. Dirt that fine meant it had to be dry when sowing, then a light raking with a leaf rake and then water. They would start out often crowding one another, so we would thin them as they grew, and often we would still have carrots when the ground began to freeze, but they might be big and woody by then. Understand, though, that the dirt back there was as black as Hil'ry's soul, would grow anything, most years adequate rainfall. I see people gardening around here and if I sneek a peek at the dirt I am often surprised the pictures on the seed packets do not turn brown if they get that dirt on them. Some of them seem to do well, though, and I have a pond that silted in over the decades, and the dirt from the bottom of that seems to do well in local gardens. Janet grew a HUGE tomato plant here 20 years ago and everybody was highly impressed, but what they did not know was the place she grew it had been where the former owners used to dump the water out of their hydroponics tanks that was saturated with "Miracle Grow"... .....Joe

If you share the carrot secret, I'll share whatever I learn about over-wintering raspberries and grapes...
You could just watch the video that Jolly provided.
I will tell you, but only with the assurance that my bedroom in your new house comes with a nice, big window. Preferably facing south.

And people wonder why younger brothers almost always dislike their older sisters.
