wildhorseluvr , I know it creates a bit more laundry, but consider throwing one or two with every load you do of jeans, etc. I do that with relatively “clean” rags, that were just used for minor cleaning or mopping up a non-greasy, non-staining spill. I’ll throw them in with jeans or towels. But the extra effort some messes create (rag needs cleaning before putting it in the washer)...just not worth it to me, unless it’s a rag I’m willing to toss in the trash afterward. And for those purposes I save worn out socks. LOL Having the 6 kids, 2 of which were boys, we were able to save up a couple. LOL

Over the last 8 yrs I became somewhat dependent on paper towels, mainly because using rags just meant more work (laundry). Lately I’ve been working on using rags again, but there are some jobs that just need PTs...like the one you described above. Thankfully that’s something that is an extremely rare occurrence around here, but there are other jobs, usually involving grease, that I won’t use rags for. Don’t want that mess in my wash machine. Grease rags are the ones that have become too nasty for anything else. Once they're grease soaked, they're kept in a safe place to use for fire-starting. That makes sense, but I’m at a point where once a year brush/branch burning is about the only fire starting I do. Besides grease from the shop, I was also thinking about things like cleaning grease out of a frying pan. Don’t want to have to hand wash rags before I can put them in my wash machine. For me, it isn’t doable.

wildhorseluvr, after the grease has cooled, add some oatmeal. Feed it to birds/chickens.

No DH or kids around anymore for a supply of worn out socks. And previously I’d have thought nothing of some extra laundry...now, every step, every extra minute or two of work has to be weighed against how much pain it costs me. A lot of things aren’t worth the trade off.

wildhorseluvr , after the grease has cooled, add some oatmeal. Feed it to birds/chickens. Again, no longer have chickens. Using oatmeal to feed wild birds would probably cost more than half a sheet of paper towel, and possibly attract rodents. If I still had chickens, that would be a very good idea! If I ever get resettled someplace I might end up with a couple chickens again. 🙂

Here’s another tip. Look at your reoccurring bills, like phone and cable if you have it. I took a look at my phone bill, switched to a similar plan and saved almost $40 a month. When I had TV I use to call yearly and typically got $5-10 in “special pricing” promotions monthly.

One thing we've done for years is keep a yellow tablet log of our expenditures other than groceries. Phone/Dish/utilities/internet all get recorded as they're paid. It's so easy to not remember month to month that last month a bill was $83, but this month $86 unless you have the number in front of you to compare. When we see bills like cell phone creeping up we call and question why. With the internet we noticed a big jump a couple months ago, and were told they were installing new cable in our area. We told them great, we hope the people who still used their service enjoyed it, but we were switching to a dish internet. Yup, dropped the monthly charge back to less than what we were paying.
Sometimes questioning and threatening to go elsewhere can save you some money.

I read a “tip” for saving $5k in 25weeks. Take a can and on it write all the numbers 1-100. Each time you deposit money in the can, mark off the corresponding number. You’ll have to deposit 4x/week to get to 5k. Honestly, don’t know if I could see myself doing it, but hopefully it works for someone!
I have a thing with quarters. I save every quarter I get my hands on. I have a pill bottle that holds exactly $10 worth. When it fills up, I wrap them up. I currently have $60 rolled up.

@wvfarmgirl, I hope you checked the dates on those quarters. I haven't checked lately, but I'm guessing any quarter pre-1965 is worth about 18 times face value, or $5.50 due to it's 90% silver content.

I save quarters too...in pill bottles. Only I don’t wrap them, they stay in pill bottles. The original bottles held $10, the ones you get now only hold $9. I have about $1,300 saved.

We don't spend change. When the kids were little we kept a 3 gallon water bottle by the door. Whenever we had change, we would throw it in there. That was the kid's vacation money to spend how they chose. Now, there isn't as much but we save all our change in a basket.
I went to cash a check yesterday at the credit union. They have switched the automated teller over to a new automated teller. She is basically a glorified ATM. So the change from my transaction had to be deposited into my account. If you want change, you have to come inside. BTW - all those who come inside....yeah, it's by appointment. LOL

Same here as to appointment only. I never spend any of my change. All the quarters go into my emergency fund. The remainder is saved and turned into my fav charity once a year. This has really slowed down this past year as I don’t do much shopping now. What I’ve been doing this year is when I make a bank withdrawal to pay my bills (once a month), I ask for a portion of it to be in smaller bills (less than $50). I pay my bills with the $50s and $100s, set aside an amount for gas/groceries/misc. and then put the remainder of the small bills into my emergency fund. The only time I touch this (very rarely) is if I forget to withdraw money from the bank the day before an ammo run. 😱 Then I’ll grab it to buy ammo, but try to remember to replace it later. I consider ammo my *other* EF. 😁

Tie worn out socks into knots and it makes an excellent dog toy. The more knots the further it goes when you throw it. Most dog toys come from china

My DD spends more $$$ on dog toys...her dogs destroy them in minutes. BadDog used to be so careful with his toys, packed them around everywhere like a baby and tucked them under his chin when he slept. Guess the “baby” ticked him off as he suddenly started destroying them. Bought him a couple new ones that were *almost” indestructible, didn’t last more than a couple days so he’s had to go without for the last 6 mo. I’ll try the sock, although it’s not just about the savings. I hate having to get down on my knees to pick up pieces of shredded toys.
