Oncologist did not say it is cancer, only that he’s afraid it is. He said it “lit up” a 6 on the PET scan, so I don’t know why he wouldn't say it’s cancer. He wants a specialist to operate and remove the 4.5X4 in tumor. We’re agreed that would be too hard on Dad. Even he, whether he grasped it or not, said to let nature take its course.

My aunt's funeral was this past Wednesday. She was 85 and lived long enough to see her children, especially her oldest boy who could have been a minor demon in Satan's army, all become stalwart Christians. She was diagnosed with lung cancer about six months ago and refused treatment, as she knew the progression of small oat cell lung cancer all too well...See, she was the tumor registrar for our parish for almost thirty years and that covered four hospitals. No sugar coating for her, she knew.
Her eyesight had dimmed, she no longer had breath enough to piddle with her flowers and raised bed vegetable garden. She couldn't even sit up long enough to work on her quilting, which was another of her life-long enjoyments. This life no longer held anything for her. Her husband, whom she had loved most dear, had been dead for a decade. She would tell anybody that cared to listen, "I'm tired, my race is run and I just want to go home".
Death happens to all of us, we are born dying. For some, death comes very early, maybe for others as young or middle-aged people. For some, you live a long life, full of joy, sorrow, pain, loneliness, love and well, you just get worn down. You get to where you just want to go Home. My aunt was tired and wanted to go. I suspect that time will come for your dad, too.
meandtk, may God grant your dad the courage and stamina to go through the trials of the coming days. May He grant him the knowledge until his last breath, that he exits this life bathed in the love of his family and will pass into a place where ultimate Love resides, pain and disease is no more and there is no suffering or sorrow. Like the old song, won't it be wonderful there...Speaking of old songs...
I've heard this song sung by several people. Jim Reeves. Johnny Cash. I like Southern Gospel, so I kinda like The Cathedrals' version. Anyway, the lyrics...
When I was but a boy in days of childhood I used to play till evening shadows come. Then winding down an old familiar pathway I heard my mother call at set of sun
Come home, come home It's supper time The shadows lengthen fast. Come home, come home, It's supper time We're going home at last.
One day beside her bedside I was kneeling, And angel wings were winnowing through the air. She heard her call for supper time in heaven And now I know she's waiting for me there.
Come home, come home
It's supper time The shadows lengthen fast. Come home, come home, It's supper time, We're going home at last.
In visions now I see her standing yonder, And her familiar voice I hear once more. The banquet table's ready up in heaven, It's supper time upon that golden shore.
Come home, come home It's supper time, The shadows lengthen fast. Come home, come home, It's supper time, We're going home at last.
We're going home at last.

Yes, thank you, Jolly. I don’t want to leave a moment sooner than I have to but for those of us who know where we’re going, it’s also something to look forward to. (Not the getting there part but the being there.) Other than being in the Lord’s presence, I think the one thing I look forward to most is never, ever having to part with loved ones again (…and not hurting anymore!!!).

Oh Jolly, you just opened my heart. So many deaths in the last 20 days in our family of the last generation. Uncles and friends. Burying one this Wednesday. Thank you for those lovely words in that song.

Jolly, I'm sorry for the loss of your beloved Aunt. Even though we understand the circle of life, and can take comfort knowing that our loved one was ready to go home, our loss still hurts. May Father bless and comfort you.

Oh, that was for the pastor. Ever notice they're so busy taking care of others, that too often we forget they're just human like the rest of us. They stumble, they fall, they laugh and they cry. Even with the faith that something better awaits, they experience pain, grief and loss.
Watching your parents go down is tough on anybody. Doesn't matter who you are...

We're going home at last. Thanks for the good words. “Suppertime” was written by your “singing governor.” Remember him?

It seems we all have our hard times, and something troubling us at almost any given time. How sweet this is! “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” John 14:16-18 KJV www.bible.com/1/jhn.14.16-18.kjv
