As I recall the last balloon they shot down, transmitted no data except navigation data through the cell phone system. They were quite quiet about that after all the hoopla they made about it being a spy ballon. According to what I was able to find out the box contained weather instruments and was likely just what the Chinese said a civilian weather balloon.
I want to get one and use wire to fashion the shape of a UFO, cover it with lightweight aluminum foil and put in some flashing led lights and set it adrift. Could be lots of fun. Put a Canadian flag on it and put a label on the hull, " James Pendrick Enterprises."

blackfeather, Surprising. You seem to believe the government is telling the truth that a Chinese balloon, with its own propulsion system, that guided itself over some of our most sensitive military installations was just a "weather balloon". What else could they call it after letting is hover over missile sites and bomber airfields? Heck, at one point it even went back over a missile site in Montana for a second look.

I wonder if THAT'S why the west coast cell phones "went dead" as that last balloon was floating east this week? At least until they figured out it was just a hobby balloon, lol.

IF I were to float a "hoax ballon" in some particular location to stir some folks up, I would use the very light weight bag your suit comes back from the dry cleaner in. They weigh almost nothing at all, and a tiny amount of aluminum colored spray paint will give it some color and make it easy to spot. They do NOT stretch, so as soon as it has enough hydrogen to make it want to go up strongly, quit filling it. It will expand as it goes higher. IF you want to make it "flame out" you have to make sure it will do so before it reaches the ground, and use a long green cannon fuse sealed into the mouth of the bag. As long as it is pure hydrogen with NO oxygen it will burn as the air enters the bag through the hole left by the fuse, but not explode. Maybe practice a lot before you include the fuse ....Joe

Um, if it's in our air space, tell me why we cannot shoot it down?

It is pretty surprising how much legit stuff there is floating around up there that is not easily identifiable with the naked eye or binoculars.
We are surrounded by mountains, so that when the sun goes below their horizon it is still shining into our sky. With a clear view of the entire sky at that hour, it is not that rare to see a point of light reflecting off of something that one would not see in full daylight.
I have seen weather balloons with some sort of payload hanging below them and at 80 miles distance an aerostat balloon with gondola underneath that the trolls use for spying on the border.
Almost seems like they need to take some care what they shoot down, but I agree that if they can ID it as foreign or of unknown type they should not hesitate.....Joe

If they were truly concerned with a balloon crashing to the ground and injuring people, they'd just put a couple .50 caliber rounds through it and let it slowly deflate. If too slow, put another couple through it. They don't need a million dollar missile to obliterate the darn thing.
