Good to see an update from the Smokes, bretf . I thought about your story the other day, the episode from the letter about the Bald Knobbers. A couple of folks with whom I was talking mentioned that maybe it was time for the Shepherd of the Hills to show up again. I let that just lie there, didn't pick it up. I don't know the term "Shepherd of the Hills". Tom was my source for all Missouri information on that segment, and if he provided it, I can't remember. But then again, I've splept and had a beer or two since then and . . . I'm sorry, what was I saying?

bretf, The Shepherd of the Hills was a fictional(?) character in a 1907 novel, since made into four films, and a continuing open air stage play in Branson MO. As far as is pertains to the Baldknobbers, it casts them in a very bad light, which to a great extent they earned later in their existence. They started out as benefactors to the communities, and did a great deal of good, but over time went off the tracks.
