I hadn't seen a rat in 30 years until we moved here. Had to burn down a dilapidated shed, afterwards two rats got into the house. Oh man , awful, the chewing sound! Traps didn't catch them, bb gun didn't work , but the rat bait was irresistible. They ate the whole pack. One of them crawled into an old piece of insulation in the basement and died. The other must have gone back outside to die.
I do not know how New York is standing it.

I'm just surprised they didn't blame it on Bush.

Several states had a bounty (at one time) on rats; Michigan being one, in which a law was enacted in 1915, authorizing the local agent of the area that the rats were taken, to pay a bounty of $.05/rat head, which were to be delivered in good condition to the county clerk; afterwhich the heads were to be disposed of by burning. My dad said that he used to make a little extra spending money as a kid doing so, as .22 ammo was two for a penny and if they could wait and line up the rats, they might be able to kill 2 or more with one shot. By the time I was able to do any shooting of rats, I think the bounty was over, but we would still go down to the local dump and pick them off at sunset as they came out. By that time a .22 round had jumped up to a penny apiece! Putting a bounty on them again, might help, but at the cost of ammo, it might be better to try killing them with a slingshot. Fortunately (or not),, the Michigan legislature decided to do away with what many considered archaic and useless laws. The bounty on rats being one of the first to go...too bad, as over the years, the price per rat head had gone up; all the way to $.10.
