At 5 cents, many people around here don't bother, they just toss them out. Some go around and collect them for the money, but many just end up in the trash. Apparently 5 cents isn't enough of an incentive for some people. My boys would work hard for 5 cents a bottle!

As a kid I walked untold miles in ditches looking for discarded beer and coke bottles, it was something to do before the paper delivery truck arrived and I started my route. In our house the word "allowance" meant the give or take 10 minutes between when the street lights came on and when I came through the door.

My best friend in grade school, Peggy O'Connor, and I would walk along the curb back in Chicago, picking up the pop bottles that people left behind.
One time, we were able to buy friendship rings, which lasted for a few months until the cheap metal broke.

...............Back when I was a juvenile delinquent , junior grade in training , and maybe a sophomore in HS , a crazy friend whose parents had bought a new house in a new development somehow acquired a garage door opener with all the freq's meant only for builders ! ...............So , we were riding around drinking beer on a hot summer night , and we turned down a street in this new development that had maybe 10 new houses in various stages of completion . The first four or so had their garage doors installed and functional . So , my little buddy in the back seat of this 1954 chevy had the opener ! We , were directly in front of the first house and he pushed the button............all 4 doors opened and the lights came on .............the builder had his late 1950's Oldsmobile station wagon pulled up into the garage in the first house and he and his GF were in the Olds and he was laying lotsa pipe ! When the garage light came ON , he was obviously blinded and couldn't see who , had interrupted his copulatory bliss . The GF was scared and trying to UNcouple but like two dogs locked together the GF just couldn't extract herself from the builder who was in no hurry to change anything ! ..............Well , we got cussed right smart , lol , by the builder and then the door came down like the curtain in a large theature and we just idled on down the street laughing SO Hard we spilled beer all over the seats in the car ! ...............That master door opener would open garage doors all over town! We'd catch people who were in their garage completely naked and had a very surprised look on their faces when 'Their' door just self initiated and opened itself with no help from them . Most were so surprised they failed to hit the close button and would stand there like a deer in the headlights . ................I apologize if I've already told this story here , before , but I still get a good laugh 55 years after it happened ! , fordy

I still pick up a penny off the ground when I see one...never know, it could be a 1909 S-VDB...not likely, but a penny saved is a penny earned.
