My potluck dishes vary but I often make baked beans, there have never been any leftovers. Before I married my DH, I attended a Cowboy Church in another town. I’d often make a large turkey roaster pan full of beans and not only were there no leftovers, the pan was almost always empty before my girls and I got any...and that was a small church. (Cowboys do know how to put away the groceries though.) Whenever we had potlucks, my girls insisted I make an extra big batch of baked beans and leave some at home before I filled the turkey roaster so they could be sure to have some later. My Mom would make baked beans for her church's salad luncheon. "I know it's not a salad, but the men need something to eat, too" is what she said. She would make a huge batch in one o' those electric roasters. She'd use several #10 cans of Bush's baked beans, but then she would "doctor them up!" She mixed in extra brown sugar, chopped sautéed onion, mustard and probably some other stuff that I have forgotten. Lastly, Mom would add an entire baked whole ham, all chunked up into bite-sized pieces. I'm not sure if there was more beans or more ham in her concoction. I think the other church basement women got a little jealous of her because of all the compliments and the oohs and aahs her beans got. There was probably some talking behind her back that "she didn't even follow the rules for the salad luncheon." A plate of those and a hunk of cornbread would be food heaven....

Seems I live in potluck land.

Tue bible and breaking of bread potluck. See above wensday youth group and potluck
Thurday community prayer night
Quilt luncheon pot luck on Tue and Friday 9to 2
Summer time many are don out doors and a grill for fish is set up.
Potluck is away of life here.

I made baked beans with hamburger for a cook out last year. Got rave reviews and the dish was cleaned out. I didn’t think they were all that great, but clearly others did. Also I’ve gotten some good reviews on my deviled eggs, so those 2 I guess I’ll stick with for future events.

solargeek, here ya go. This is for a small batch, just double, quadruple or whatever you need for a crowd. Old Settlers Baked Beans1 lb. diced bacon 1 lb. hamburger 1 med. onion, diced 2 cans kidney beans, drained 2 cans pork & beans 1-2 cans small lima beans, drained 2/3 c. sugar 2/3 c. brown sugar 1/2 c. ketchup 1/2 c. BBQ sauce 1 t. Chili powder 1 T. prepared mustard (not the powder) salt and pepper to taste Brown the bacon, onion and hamburger. Drain. Add remaining ingredients. Bake in a casserole dish or roasting pan, covered, in a 350 degree oven for 1 hr. Also works well in crockpot. Bigger batches obviously take longer to bake. *Cans of beans are the usual 15-16 oz.(?) size *I usually don’t mess with dicing the raw bacon, I cook it first, then drain and chop it up. Then cook the hamburger and onion together, drain and add. *You can use other beans if you choose. I happen to prefer this combo.
