US Military tracking high altitude balloon over Colorado

Officials told CBS News that it is tracking a "high-altitude balloon" flying over the Western part of the country.

U.S. officials also told CBS News that a military aircraft spotted the balloon and determined that it's not a threat, but its origin and purpose remain unknown.

The balloon was reportedly over the western part of the country, drifting east in the jet stream, according to U.S. officials.

In my humble opinion, in order to determine if it is a threat, you gotta get it on the ground and look it over real good. I think it takes a genuine dumbass not to shoot it down over the very first patch of clear ground and dismember it.....Joe

IIRC, the ballon that was shot down over Lake Huron during the "China ballon" was from a ballooning group in Michigan.
They are relatively inexpensive to build for today's technology. If you wanted to nerd out with your kids or grandkid's it would be a fun project. I know I would have loved to do it 40 years ago as a cub scout.

The military didn't scramble jets until it was over Colorado??? Makes me think that it had to have originated in this country. Otherwise, it says that our military is utterly inept. If it was foreign, the military should have scrambled the jets while it was still offshore, over territorial waters.

The military did definitely scramble jets here. There were several and they were very loud.
