Not that it applies today, but I recall in my 1940's and 1950's youth, EVERY kid had a few cap pistols, some savage looking rubber or wooden swords, at least one razor sharp pocket knife that stayed with him at school and at home. The pocket knife, not the other stuff at school.
It's just barely possible that we are not seeing too many toy guns, but too few. Back then they were so common nobody even saw them. I actually "shot" a state police officer downtown, and he took me into the grocery store and bought me an ice cream sandwitch, told me that he hoped i joined the Navy when I grew up instead of the army, which I had previously planned to do.
That was before we all got red rider BB guns a couple of years later, and taught one another what pain was really all about.
I guess those days are gone forever....Joe

............I got a BB gun in the 4th. grade , there were 2 street lights on the opposite side of the street , one to the left of our home and one to the right at an intersection . Both were about 100 feet away , I got so good at my accuracy , I could pop both bulbs out without much effort . These 'street' lights consisted of a standard 200 watt bulb with a 12 inch , flat lid on top.......not very sophisticated . ............If , I was an aspiring juvenile delinquent , today , like I was 65 years previous I'd get me a 22 rifle with the best silencer I could buy , and shoot out as many Red Light Camera's as I could get away with ! I despise those items as they are a manifestation of the intrusion of government where it doesn't belong . , fordy

If the whole thing happened in the way that the cops are saying then the kid was pretty stupid. I do not know what is going on, but it does seem like this line is being used a lot, "We chased him, he turned and pulled a gun from under his shirt, his jacket, pocket, or whatever." Are the youth of today that stupid that they continue to act like tough guys with little boy toys and have not yet learned from the numerous other incidents that did not work out too well for others? Or have the cops found an excuse that just happens to work most of the time? It did not work for that cop in South Carolina once a video was posted of what actually happened. Things are getting really stupid lately. And I wonder if that BLM guy that called for more police patrols in his neighborhood after he was mugged will be attending the scheduled riots.... er ... protests? And I must have missed BLM's riots...er ... protests in Chicago after all of the black lives lost in August (a new record for that city). Or are they afraid to go into that city without a police escort? Not a single cop want to shoot someone. It happens to the unlucky ones. I have shot someone and it will affect you for years even if you did the right thing. That happen 15 years ago and now I still have nightmare every once in a while.

I am pretty sure that I never mentioned in my post that any cops like shooting someone. I do remember saying that the same excuse is being used quite frequently and most have video to support the reasoning. But then there was the cop in SC that used the same excuse and got caught lying through his teeth by someone with a cell phone camera.
I have also been involved in incidents where there were only two people in a room shooting at each other and I was the only one to walk out of the room still alive. I sleep like a baby unless it is too warm that night.
