There has been a rash of break-ins in the area around my old farm. Two businesses have been hit and the safe was stolen from at least one. I'm not sure how many houses have been burglarized.
My boss told me one evening last week his daughter-in-law and family were all out in their barn, so the lights in their house were off. They heard a car in the driveway, and her boyfriend went to check it out. Two men had been walking up to the house, but when he appeared in the doorway, a woman inside the car yelled to them, and they ran back and got in the car and it sped away.
I'm glad we've removed our cows, equipment and tools from the old place. It's really a shame as I had NO problems with theft in the 12 years I was there. As it is, I told Numb that I don't want to work out there alone anymore, since the trailer and outbuildings are beyond some trees and can't be seen from the road. I don't want to be ambushed by burglars! We have a few items of mostly sentimental value left to remove, and he'll have to go with me, and we'll go prepared IYKWIM. No sense taking chances ...

If You keep Whistles In Mind
Packing a whistle is NEW YORK'S go to metal safety device.

Haha, Numb says, "The only whistles that will be going on is the bullets as they fly through the air ..."

A suggestion, don't lock the door when you leave or you'll be replacing the door jamb.

Tell the local cops they are welcome to hang out there and smoke dope or catch a nap on slow nights......Joe

Local cops? LOL
I remember when I bought the place, one of the neighbors told me, "The sheriff's office is about 45 minutes away, so out here we generally take care of things on our own."
Don't think I've ever seen s cop car go down my road ...

do you have a couple of big dogs? Once we had somebody walk in and syphon gas on a regular basis out of the car. five gallons at a time. DH did not want to believe ity but I kept an eye on it and yep, five gallons were missing. Then we got a dog and one night the dog was barking ferociously down the holler. DH said, there goes the gasoline thief, and he never came back.A safe, good idea. Put important things in a metal trash can and put old envelopes into the safe. Any other ideas?
Question. out in the country it is popular to have safety lights on a big pole that illuminates the whole area. What for? I did not want one. I think that is like holding the light for the burgler. all he needs to do is walk quietly, he can see where he is going while you snooze away thinking you are safe. Nope, keep it dark. Leave a few things lying around for somebody to trip and fall over. No booby trap stuff, tricycles and the like. Our dogs are teddy bears, but strangers are af raid, and when our matriarch growls you won't get out of the car. and she growls at all strangers.
Our nearest neighbors had a nice cabin next to the house, it was used to cook meth, then they tried to sell the house and set the cabin on fire. The police got their cut on all drug deals, I know from a reformed dealer who got religion. Dumb as I am, I found a rubber maid tote in our woods near the fence with a lot of empty sudafed packages. I thought, somebody sure was sick.

I like our yard light, it illuminates nearly all the outbuildings and parking area behind the garage. We've got three dogs who alert us to any interlopers, they being four of two legged, and although we have movement sensitive lights in three areas, there isn't one where we'd exit the house to check what the dogs are barking at.

I still do not know what is so great about safety lights. If I want to see something I turn the light on. If it is dark, a burgler comes, four dogs, (in my case) are barking, I think a burgler would dirty his breeches if he was forced to break into my house in the dark, shining a flashlight so I can see where he is. . I have to admit, DH, with a different background than mine, and hankering for a yardlight, leaves the garage light on. How do you think the gas burgler could see the car ( He came at least once a week for I do not know how long).

I really dislike those awful vapor lights. They hardly seem a safety feature when, as tabitha points out, they eliminate the element of surprise. Besides that, they contribute to light pollution. Neighbor got one of those damnable things, and it blocks so many stars from our sight.
