John Kennedy said it over 50 years ago. Pope Francis said it most recently. In between, Mitt Romney put it like this--
"We are a nation of immigrants. We are the children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the ones who wanted a better life, the driven ones, the ones who woke up at night hearing that voice telling them that life in that place called America could be better."
I would like to insert one word into this popular quote, and that word is 'conquering.' I would not argue with a second word, 'coveting.' And maybe we should add that we are a nation of immigrants who came to this country to get away from religious persecution and strife. Whatever kind of immigrants it was that came to this country, it was catastrophe and disaster for those Americans who were already here.
President Obama and Secretary Kerry have announced that the total number of refugees allowed in by the United States would increase by 30,000 to 100,000 in 2017.

Correct but many of today's bunch are here not by legal means nor want to change from their previous country's way of thinking or living .Those in the past became Americans in every sense of the word . Also there was no free passes for food or housing ,nor did thy expect such .

Those immigrants wanted to become Americans, it's sad today's immigrants don't.
My father was first generation Swedish American, and lived his early years in a small town in N Dakota. The population was mainly German. At home he spoke Swedish, to play with the other kids he spoke German, but in school - nothing but English. One place we went wrong in this country was accommodating new immigrants wish to remain separate from society.

..............Along with the freedoms granted to immigrants coming to the USA , they are required to become citizens and adhere to the justice system and learn OUR language ! They , also , can practice their chosen religion freely and openly without interference from others who disagree with their beliefs . .............Those who practice the Muslim religion would , over time , would force all others to accept their beliefs , as well as their Shira(sp) legal system ! No other religion , to my knowledge , has this stated goal stated explicitly in it's bible except Islam . Even the 12 million illegal Mexicans living here currently has NO desire to 'convert' the rest of US to becoming Catholics . , fordy

Well, since my last try at posting grew wings, I'll try again.

~~~ So true, PLUS we didn't have a white house governing by how many potential democrats they can let into America.
Whatcha bet before the 2016 election, the federal gov't is going to push to have the voting rules changed. Maybe take it away from the states or some such.
Also there was no free passes for food or housing ,nor did thy expect such . I went to Catholic school from Kg - 8th grade. Went to public school for high school. First time in my life I ever saw anyone coddled for not speaking English. Heck, the nuns would help you to learn whatever you needed to learn to become a good Catholic and a good American, but no way did the give a pass to the kids who came in speaking a different language. Those kids were in class with the younger kids until they caught on enough English to function - and they worked hard to do that, because no one wanted to be in with the "baby" classes! ESL became not a means of mainstreaming immigrants into the regular classes, but an entitlement with an ever-growing list of freebies attached to it. Part of the reason we are so screwed today.
I forgot about putting kids.... mainly Italians joining family here in younger grades to help them and the did learn fast.. at home the could speak Italian to their grand or great grand parents.. often the great grand parents moved in to two generations of children and grandchildren who moved here before the great grandparents it was a case of aging relatives coming to America to die with family.
blueingidiot,
I am glad you brought up this issue. All our lives we have heard the stories about the destruction of indigenous people. Modern folks cry crocodile tears over things that happened hundreds of years ago. And especially about American Indians and black slaves.
And yet right in front of our eyes countries are being over run with illegal criminals. Our own country over run. Why can't people make the connection that, yes, it is ok to protect nations from invaders?
Without the melting pot that renders all immigrants Americans, the United States is nothing more than the Balkans with money.
We are now a country of "separate but equal" preserving immigrant ethnic identity. And I wonder about the equal. Look up America's melting pot myth.
Haven't even read the posts yet. Sorry! But, my husband would totally say, "wait there was a native population here before us! Look how it worked out for them with a flood of immigrants!"
History repeating itself. And we never learn...
