So I found some out of date cake and brownie mixes in the pantry, 10 years + out of date. Too old to use??? I know I could add some extra baking powder to them if only a year or so out of date, but is 10 years pushing it?

Honestly? If it wasn't full of bugs and smelled ok, I'd use them.

If there aint no bugs, or mold, its going in a 400F oven for 30 min.... It'll be edible.

I'm with TxGal. If it's not buggy, go for it. OTOH... I am reminded of my Aunt Georgia May's wedding. Mom and Aunt Maryann were trying to get all the cakes baked, and this was back in the day before 24 hour stores. There were some bugs in the mixes. They debated, then figured out the temp in the oven was enough to kill any bacteria, and the bugs as well. Nobody was the wiser that they got extra protein in the wedding cake.

Thanks for info (more like agreeing with my gut instinct) Opened one of the boxes and peeked at the contents that are still sealed inside the plastic. Looks ok to me. It's DD birthday today, but I baked her a from scratch cake. Will hang onto the out of date ones and make one later on and see how it is (especially if self isolation continues into May, or June or gasp July)

I remember pulling KP duty in basic training, and the first duty of the morning was sifting 50# bags of flour through a window screen. I'd guess we'd harvest about a half pound of weevils per bag.
At my later duty station it wasn't unusual to open a biscuit and find a well baked insect.

I know at times Sweetie has used fredh baking powder with a bit of baking soda in a mix found in the back of the pantry.. She was the only one who knew the difference until she told me later..

Only if you use the ten year old eggs.
