therealsurvivalists.com/thermos-cooking/I thought this was pretty cool! I know on the series, War Time Farm, (which I highly recommend! Very insightful about how people lived in the UK during WWII.) The lady was shown using a hay cooker to conserve on cooking fuel.

Mom used to cook wild rice and wheat berries overnight in a thermos. We ate the grain for breakfast.

I use something similar but a little bigger (3 quart) made by Stanley called a Camp Crock ( Link to article) Picked it up for $20 and it has worked like a dream - especially great when I'm taking something to a potluck - spill proof, keeps food hot for a long time, easy clean up. It will also keep food cold - so great for taking a potato or macaroni salad.
