In the liberal political world that is Canada, keeping their citizens happy today is much more important than fending off disaster tomorrow.
I wonder if their back up plan for a worldwide meltdown is to nationalize their gold mines? As it stands right now, their entire reserve is composed of paper, and not very good paper at that.

Think the boneheads in power believed the story about the only value of gold was for industrial use ?

Meh, they're inviting ex-pats into their country, so maybe they figure all the Movie Stars will bring in big bucks.

Why have any gold reserves if they are so small as to be useless anyway?. This is a serious question. If a government can not cover even a small fraction of the cash they have printed, why worry about keeping any?

That certainly raised my eyebrows. Banks hoarding cash? The next step in the power play will be mandating a change to a new currency, forcing hoarders to fork over their okd held cash. Then there will be people who recycle their cash to keep it fresh. Or maybe the government will simply walk into the bank and confiscate what they deem too much cash. Or assign a fee based on the physical size of bank vaults. Sheesh- it's an endless waste of social energy to keep ahead of that.

If a government can not cover even a small fraction of the cash they have printed, why worry about keeping any? They don't need it for the tons of useless paper they have now . They will need it to back what they buy when all the fiat paper goes South to stay . As in they want a truck load of oranges from Florida and the grower says got any gold to pay with . I think in the near future China is going to require gold for trade settlement instead of dollars or at the least their own currency no dollars . Most countries are one perceived disaster from default the US included. The only real thing keeping the dollar a float is faith once people wake up and see the whole scam it will be curtains . Funny printed on the dollar it tells you it is a debt note and that it belongs to the Fed.Res.
