We've fallen under the minute control of the administrative state, mainly started by President Woodrow Wilson, with the advent of the "expert" class determining what's best for us plebes.
In some instances there's no way back. Take for instance Social Security. Since it's inception the populace no longer felt the need to prepare for the day when we could no longer work, and the nuclear family dissolved when younger generations no longer felt a need to care for their elders. That mindset has become so embedded in society that doing away with it would put millions into penury and starvation.
Taking just that one example shows we've purposely been entrapped into a situation where the electorate would rebel against that, and many, many other similar instances.
With the exception of our luxuries and conveniences, how different are we than the Soviet Union's way of controlling their people? Dependence on, and bowing to the government's wishes seem to be just a difference in degree.
