Yes, tarbe.. That is a fair estimate of size..
A predator around people or livestock is a legal kill most any time of year.. Here the rule is if you do this, you are not allowed to harvest or use any part of the animal. Technically you are supposed to report the intervention, but most times the process proceeds under rules of the 3-S control system..
One time our neighbor the bee keeper killed a problem bear.. Reported it as required and was promptly told he would be cited and likely arrested for out of season hunting and waste of the animal as he buried it right away.. Wrong thing to say to a livestock producer.. Bees ARE considered livestock. And neighbor is a retired RCMP chief officer for the north half of the province and Yukon..

It came to nothing, but I'm trying.
Put the alarm sensor out yesterday, and about 1:30am it sounded off. Grabbed up the Mini-14 and went to look. Why not the 30.06? It's bolt action with 5 shots available. I just flat don't need to be working a bolt in that confined area if my first shot just ticked him off. I'd much rather have 20 .223 shots available in fast succession, even if they are less effective individually.
Don't know what it was, but the lid on the chick starter can was knocked off, which I wouldn't think a possum or raccoon could do, but I might be underestimating them.
I think I'll put a game camera out today and maybe see who our nocturnal visitor is.

We are in Bear Zone 1 and they are going to stop this year's Bear season after 20 animals are killed in the zone.
Zone 1 is the smallest of the three zones, but has the highest quota...
I should be a full-time tax-paying MO resident in the next month or two, so will likely put in for a tag next year. Just in case...
Fortunately we have had no damage the past year on our place from bear. But we did have a nice pile of bear poo on the porch last visit.

Yesterday (Sunday) we were out by the airport on the far side of the river valley to pick apples.. The airport has 8' security style chain link fence and cattle guards all the way around.. Also cameras in problem spots.. This because bears can climb the fence in a hot second..
So client was telling Sweetie that she took groceries into the house from there little car.. Returning to get the last grocery sack and pizza from the back.. Only find a bear trying to tear the back of the car off to get the hot pizza.. This doing $300 damages...
What a set of bad timing and coincident there..
How was your day ??

A couple years ago now when the forest fires were bad around the area where Mother in law lives... The deer were coming to town to graze yards and such..
Several found there way by the hospital and were having fun going in and out the automatic doors at the walk in ER.. They would go in, lounge around the lobby a bit and leave for the next ones to look it over.. Obviously someone forgot to shut off the auto door when the hospital went into a potential evacuation mode..

Friday, 09-24.... Bugger..... Up early as a usual old guy thing... Always give the area around the night light a good looking over.. Spent a few minutes on the computer until it got light enough to look around again..
In daylight I discovered "something" had been in the crab apple tree.. Breaking branches, scattering leaves, bent the pole for the ornamental bird house, made a big mess of the whole area..
Give you 3 guesses what caused this...
It has been a couple years since something damaged the tree... At that time, the last known bear in the tree overwintered in the freezer..

Tim Horton , That's awful nice of you to let that poor bear hibernate for the winter in your freezer.
Heard last week of another bear sighting in our area, but when I asked where they heard about it, like always it went back to the same gal who's been talking about bears for a year now. Nobody else admits to seeing one. Makes me wonder if maybe she's not starting the margaritas a bit early.

Neighbor lady down the road shot a smaller 200 lb., bear up near the Canadian border. Says she can get one more tag and get another one. She indicated they were quite thick in the area .

I have never eaten bear, do you fix roasts, steaks like other species? Do they have a strong game taste? In my opinion the taste isn’t unpleasant. The key is eating it hot. To me it’s like lamb, if it’s hot it’s good, but the minute it starts to cool the fat congeals which makes it inedible.

.............Why , don't you put an electric fence around your fruit tree's ? Do you have Grizzlies as well as Black bears ? , fordy === === Yes.. We do have grizzly... We did see a "brown" bear near our big barn this spring, but could not make a good ID..... The whole neighborhood was on high alert most of the summer..
Electric fence here has to be barbed and tight enough to hold cattle to get under a bears fur to give a shock.. Otherwise they just walk through a lot of set ups.. We can get 2 tags a person a year to use in either spring or fall season..
Bear is a lot like pork in how you handle, and cook it.. Un like being an omnivore once a neighbor got one that had been living on frogs, craw fish, musk rats and such from the local swamp... His dogs would not eat it..
We usually de bone the whole animal for roasts and ground meat.. This the fastest, most useful and easiest for us... My favorite is bear, pork, and summer sausage spice made into a breakfast patty mix..
