Pheasant season opens on October 31 this year, and I'm ready. Had about 30 or so hanging out in the tall weeds down by the drain field, hopefully they'll stick around another few weeks.

I remember a time when there were a LOT of pheasants in this part of the country; both to be seen and heard.
Sadly, those days are long past, in fact, I was pleasantly surprised just this past week, to see *(and hear)
a rooster take off over a corn field not far from home. It's been ages....not sure of why the decline,
but a lot of the smaller fields that were once bordered with overgrown fence rows are history,
as they've been buried or plowed up to enable large tract farming; 80 or more acres at a time
instead of seveal 10-20 or so... so obviously a loss of habitat and cover. But that certainly
doesn't explain why you still have the vast numbers out your way Corny....

I think efforts like "Pheasants Forever" really helps the population. They plant habitat and food plots. The Nebraska Game and Parks has mail carriers counting pheasants, and even CRP helps. We've seen declines in past years, due to weather, over populated coyotes, etc, but we work hard to keep the pheasants at a hunting population. Some people will even raise them and turn them loose on their own dime.

I remember as a kid pheasant hunting in harvested Minnesota corn fields, without a gun. My dog would flush one, and grab it by its tail feathers to bring it down. The trick was to get there before he chewed it up. Many times I'd come home with 3 or 4 "slightly chewed" birds.

I've not seen pheasant around here, but there are loads of turkey. Roadrunners, too.

Nothing better than bird hunting with a good dog.
