I have read two books I own on the story of Shackleton and the crew of the Endurance and their ill fated attempt at crossing the Antarctic via the South Pole, which had been conquered just a few years prior.
Their ship got stuck in the ice and began to break up, they abandoned ship and made their way out onto the pack ice.
One book is so-so, the other, titled 'Endurance', I believe is the one I prefer. It's a completely gripping telling of what these men went through as they tried to get to rescue. It took them a couple years as I recall, but they made it w/o losing any of the men.
The story about one of the men out hunting then being HUNTED by a giant leopard seal is just incredible....

Read it.
Recommend it.
I'm amazed at what some people will do just to say they've done it. The whole trip was stupid, IMO. But it was an amazing story, filled with bravery, and tenacity, and perseverance. Many people would have given up and died.

www.polarpost.ru › forum › download › file I googled it looking for pdf the site is Russian but the book is in English. If you go straight from google it downloads immediately. Now that I look at it it might not be the same book but there are others that are readable on line. Here is another link that looks like the right one. epdf.pub/endurance-shackletons-incredible-voyage.html

I finished it. Keeps you interested. I learned one important thing from it, I'm not going to travel to the antarctic, or the arctic for that matter.
