I've always appreciated Pony and Daw not letting on that my avatar is a picture of a neighbor who I thought was rather intimidating. After all, admins are supposed to be intimidating, aren't they? If my avatar was of a 5'6" rotund and balding man with thick glasses who'd care what I said?

Grumble grumble... it rained all day so I took off to rural king. Do you have one in your area? They had a sale on seeds, buy one, get one free. Yeah, the price was 30 cents higher than Burpees at Lowes and the content was half as much. so do the math. I just wanted some onion seeds. wound up getting two packs of carrots and a pack of Early Jersey wakefield.
I hate that. I hate coupns, all those shenanigans and jump through five hoops to get a special. I was going to buy something from Kohl's. No I do not have a card. you get ten % off for this and they need your social security. I said forget it. I do not like to have to take a course so I can figure out how to shop from you. I am so glad we have a few really nice second hand stores. Pay cash. Except for underwear and shoes....

Since this thread is a kind of free-for-all, I have a story about Rural King.
It (RK) started out as a single store, a sort of farm supply mercantile and hardware store in Mattoon, Illinois, where I also had my longest running territory as an automotive jobber salesman of parts and equipment. My territory was rural, so the in-town salesman would have called on Rural King if he had been doing his job, but to be seen there would have made his regular dealers mad, so he avoided the place, making the boss mad, instead.
RK was chiefly known as a place to buy nuts and bolts by the pound that were so cheap and soft that if you overtightened them they would stretch instead of break, and everything they sold the farmers they sold cheap, and so they had to buy cheap.
Our main competitor in town, Waynors, was their main supplier, and one fall day the outside city salesman for that firm spent the morning writing RK's winter order for parts, antifreeze, oil, filters, spark plugs.....the whole list.
He totaled the order on the customer's mechanical adding machine at the boss's desk, handed it to the boss to sign, and with a smirk, said "and THAT, sir, is the FINEST G... D.... order I have ever written"
Boss took the order, several pages, tore them across both ways, said "You do not take my Lord's name in vain....Get out"
And THAT is the story of how my co-worker and fellow peddler Jesse Hopper became the principle supplier of automotive parts for the single Rural King store in existence at the time.
Jesse might have made the same mistake a month earlier, but part of the game is studying the mistakes others make so you don't have to repeat them.
If anybody cares to quote this to the local RK store, feel free. I do not think it reflects badly on anybody…...Joe

Locally we have Tractor Supply, but not Rural King. They were running a sale on cattle panels a few years ago, so I went in and ordered 30. I was informed that due to the sale they'd sold out the day before, and wouldn't accept an order for more at that price.
Aggravated, I went to a little family owned Feed & Seed Hardware store just down the road. Yep, they had hundreds in their lot, and were $1.50 per panel cheaper than Tractor Supply's sale price. I very rarely shop at Tractor Supply now.

I very rarely shop at Tractor Supply now. We shopped TSC when my oldest worked there. Rarely do we go now. The clerks are rude and lazy and it so hard to get into their parking lot. We mostly shop Atwoods. I have issues with them but it's all we got so we try to be more selective with what we purchase. We've gotten moldy, rancid feed on more than one occassion at Atwoods. They replaced it but still a hassle. Also some of their stuff is refurbished and not labeled so. We found that out with a generator we bought. We brought it back and were told to call the manufacture for the warranty issues we were having. When we did the company said the generator wasn't covered because it was a refurb. We went over every square inch of that box. No where did it say refurbished.

There is a small TSC in Bolivar. I was in with a neighbor one time. Could not believe the prices. One in Joplin that is much larger prices high there too. Ordered something there could not find elsewhere. Don’t remember what it was , might be it never came in or I forgot to pick it up it was so long time. I do remember checking several times.
I think people believe that if it is at TSC it is cheaper and that is the best place to buy.

We shopped TSC when my oldest worked there. Rarely do we go now. The clerks are rude and lazy and it so hard to get into their parking lot. I generally like TSC and RK, but both of them have to be shopped with caution to get good deals. I buy feed at TSC because DW likes their horse feeds, their feed prices are good, and TSC doesn't charge us sales tax (7%), unlike every other feed store in town.
But one very annoying thing we have noticed is that every last TSC there is has a terrible parking lot. We often have a trailer of 16', 22', or even 30' length, depending on what chores we were getting done that day in addition to TSC shopping. There isn't a single TSC anywhere in our region that can accommodate the 30' flat bed and it is with difficulty and a lot of run over curbs that I can get one of the shorter trailers into their loading area. It can be very frustrating and I have occasionally driven away without shopping because I could see I was going to have too much hassle trying to get past the parked cars.

We used to buy all our feed from MFA, a Missouri chain. Then a local guy whose family has been in this area for several generations opened a little feed store about 8 miles from us. He's been farming all his life, so he knows about feed going rancid, and rotates his stock. He knows the ins and outs of all types of animal feeds, and generally knowledgeable in all things pertaining to animals. He's open 7 days a week, only closed on three holidays. His prices are as good as anyone's. A harder worker I've never seen. Probably about 5'9", 145 pounds, but loads out those feed sacks like they're pillows. We're blessed to have a place like that so close. DEKE, It sounds like Florida tax laws are similar to Missouri's when it comes to agricultural products, no tax. A couple places have tried charging me tax on mineral blocks, etc. but I remind them of the law. They just want my phone number to register me in the system, then no tax. I've got a hunch they were pocketing the tax.

I thought TSC was the place that had those things farmers buy. where else can you get it. A TSC opened up in our one traffic light town, and we went there to keep it open. LIked it, the guys working there were doing a good job. Helping me load heavy stuff with out me asking,
we quit going when they boss became a woman and every thing I like to ask a guy about is done by a woman. I hate that. Then I go to Michaels and buy some knitting yarn, and who is waiting on me, a young fella.
We have an amish hardware store in the vicinity and we buy our feed from an amish place. too. Not in fancy bags, they mix it themselves and it is nonGMO, also cheaper. we save the bags to give back to them. Next time we go I need a few bags of quick lime. I also find metal bandings that are around bundles of railroad ties. everywhere else they are plastic. I have to go again next time we need feed and see if I can find some more. DH is embarrassed to ask, I am not. So I talk to the young fella who is helping me and I tell him about making weeding tools.
On the way into Lowes I noticed firewood for sale, prepackaged. Birch over nine bucks a bundle. 'hardwood' looked like oak to me, almost 8. Who buys that?
I hope you do not get the idea I am a cheapskate.
