Had a step-son years ago who was 4.0+ all through high school and college, had his choice of med schools with partial scholarships. He had an old Pontiac that we worked on seemingly all the time. He never could get the "lefty loosey, righty tighty" firm in his mind.
What's his specialty now? He's an anesthesiologist MD, turning knobs and valves to keep people alive.

One of my oldest friends is an orthopedic surgeon now, graduated from Duke with a 4.0. His dad owned a gas station/repair shop that the oldest brother still runs. Since I know the whole family I doubt your step son and Jeff the orthopedist are related but...............possibly, lol. His brother will always brag about the youngest one's accomplishments, but end it with, "He still can't drive a car or balance a check book though." LOL IDK if his record still stands in our hometown but at 16, he once wrecked 3 different vehicles he was driving in 4 separate accidents - all in the same day.
