Not being all that smart with electricity, I need some advice.
I've got a 45 watt solar system on my garage roof hooked to a single heavy duty 12 volt battery through a charge controller, then from the battery to a 400 watt inverter. It's purpose is strictly to power the base station for my alarm system, which it's done in the past during extended power outages.
Apparently the panels have gone kaput, no voltage read whatsoever. They're about 8 years old. I've got another set of panels exactly the same to replace them, but looking at Harbor Freight's website they don't carry the 3 panel 45 watt system anymore. What they've got is a 4 panel 100 watt kit.
My question is: Even though the kit comes with a charge controller, is that too much wattage for a single battery?

It's the charge controller's job to protect the battery, so supposedly (within reason of course) you can't over charge/throttle the battery.

No, you're fine at 100 watts. You could or should even go higher when you can do it and add a 2nd battery to give yourself a nice little backup power supply. Hook up a string of LED lights too for those summer time storms that knock out the power. Part of what I do is electrical stuff got my certification in solar installation in 2010.

Your truck battery can easily get 600 watts thrown at it from the alternator, so...…..Joe

Bought the 100 watt panels, and Blackfeather talked me through a discount coupon that saved me $40! Shipping was a whopping $9. Haven't gotten the kit yet, but expect it any day.
