I got really tired of the glug, glug, glug the EPA has forced us to listen to, so being the rebel I am, I decided to find a way to vent gas cans like the used to be. I drill a 1/2" hole in the can, avoiding the seam. Take a piece of wire about 18" long and curve it slightly, drill a small hole the size of the wire in a valve cap, put the valve cap on the wire, then flatten the end of the wire 1/4" back from the end so the cap can't slide off. Take the valve stem out of the valve body. Fish the wire/cap through the 1/2" hole, and through the spout hole. Screw the valve cap on the valve body, and pull back through the hole. Seat the valve body with pliers. Attachment Deleted

I have used this method for years, what I have found is you need to buy quality valve stems from a tire dealer. The cheap auto parts one will only last a few months and before the split and break off. I have started using the metal threaded ones and have had better luck

I think everybody hates those cans except the guys selling them. All I do is take an ice pick and put a hole as high as it will go behind the handle. It's a permanent fix and takes all of 30 seconds! The problem I have is remembering to do it when I gave an ice pick.Ha! You know what I mean. Wade
