I miss those days. My short bucket list includes driving/racing on a NASCAR track. There are a few that let you race against others in small groups. If It won't do 180 or more, I'll keep my money.

I've driven Daytona in a retired NASCAR car. They limited our speed to ~165, IIRC. It was a blast. When you are in the high banked turns, the car squashes down on the shocks giving tons of grip. But when you hit the straight, that compression suddenly lifts and it feels like the car is leaping into the air. It took a bit of getting used to.

An older friend in HS, Larry, had a buddy of his in the FHP clock him on the interstate late at night in the 70's. I think he had 78-79 Monte Carlo he modified but the speedometer pegged out at 120 or 140 mph. He checked back later with him and found out it would do 183.

I did that at Las Vegas quite a while ago. I don't remember the speed but probably about the same. Now I don't drive over 35 MPH....

"Slightly Altered" motorcycles was my thing. Don't really know the max speed on my last "go fast" bike, the speedometer only went to 150mph. An 1100cc punched out to 1210cc, several modifications I never really understood like cam shaft alterations and muffler flow.
I'd never even think of riding it today, reflexes have slowed, vision is reduced, and generally all the symptoms of an old man. But I know if I had that baby under me I wouldn't be able to resist cranking it through these Ozark mountain curves.

When I was 14, I spent a few weeks at a friends house. Well, something came up, and I couldn't wait until the weekend for my parents to pick me up. My friends dad had a flight out of MSP to Saudi Arabia that morning, so I hopped a ride home on his 1200 Yamaha. He had 2 hours to go from 70 miles south of Duluth/superior, drop me off, and get to MSP airport. The normal car ride was about a hour and a half from my friends house to mine, That morning it was 40 minutes. I was pretty happy to get off that bike.

fixitguy, that sounds terrifying! I have never particularly enjoyed driving fast, never got a speeding ticket or even went over the speed limit! Bad eyes and depth perception will do that to a person. I did love driving a sports car though, it handled so much more responsively that the clunckers and minivans that were my sole experience up until then.

180 mph is 264 feet per second. That's 36 feet shy of a football field Every. Single. Second.
I love speed, but I won't drive as fast as I used to, mostly because nothing in our stable of vehicles does well over 80 mph.
Used to have a '76 Gran Torino with the Windsor engine. I pushed it on a straightaway, got over the 110 on the speedometer, and backed it down quick. I have been told that the speedometers were rigged to read faster over a certain point, but I wasn't going to tempt a cop to give me a ticket so I could find out.
Now, I'm all about the low-end torque. Haven't been off-road in a while, but it's fun to take the old CJ-7 into tight, nearly vertical spaces.

Yes, that is just me to# (don't we have to put # after those two words are next to each other or do we stop due to liden) Mom always said that a car was an auto-matic weapon....remember that when driving.
