Has anyone ever had consistent luck with germinating and growing carrots?
What I've been doing for the last few years just isn't cutting it anymore and I would like to actually harvest more than what a single bunny can survive off of for more than 10 minutes.

Check out Deep South Homestead YouTube channel. Danny King has two or three videos about growing carrots. I've had better luck since I started to imitate him.

I did check it out and saw that there are 30 videos listed with none of them seeming to solely discuss growing carrots.
Am I missing something?

I've never had any problem growing carrots. Germination rates seem to drop as the seeds get older but that applies to most seeds. As they're biennial & I don't hassle w/ letting them go to seed, I simply buy new seed every couple of years.
All I do is sprinkle the seeds on top on the soil and gently water them in. I planted carrots on 9/24 and they were up within a few days. ETA: since seeds are sown on the surface, make sure that the soil stays moist until germination.

I have had no success with carrots, but I am going to try something new in the early Spring.
I picked up a ridiculously expensive packet of carrot seed tape. Going to plant it as soon as the frost crystals are gone from the soil.
I'll keep you posted.

@pony, Here is were long winters and goat peppered poop comes in handy.
Ok dry a quart or so of the goat gifts. Water and cornstarch paste Using a paper plate spread out a few seeds Pick up a pellet touch the paste touch a seed. Place on another paper plate let dry and store in a Ziploc bag.
Do that with each of those tiny seeds if you tend to plant the seed too close....
Planting seeded pellets allows for better spacing and the pellet absorbs the water keeping the seed wet.
Note.... Winter is boring in Alaska

My carrots did not do great with the newspaper homemade tape other seeds did better ...I wondered if the newspaper was too sturdy for the seeds. themotherhen, how did you do it.

I do the same, just sprinkle across the top of the soil and water them in. Many of the tiny wildflower seeds need sunlight on them to germinate and I suspect carrots might be the same.

Yep, although I don't see any indications that carrot seeds need sunlight to germinate, in fact I think the opposite is true ...they need darkness. It's just that I usually have better luck sowing them (or any tiny seeds) on the surface & letting them settle into the soil by themselves when I water them.

Pretty much no luck with carrots or other root vegs here. Germination is maybe 50/50, but some of the tops never get any size. And no carrots worth digging up. I speculate the fast drainage is a big factor. I grew good beets and turnips out in the country, where conditions were almost opposite. Oddly enough, it looks like the short row I planted very late with old seed has lush tops and some carrots.
