Okay, so I'm treating myself to a bit of decadence tonight.... frankly I've been in a funk this week and could use a pick me up... nothing says pick me up better than BBQ !! (Well, other than a cute red head)...
The office gals were having something delivered at lunchtime, and it turns out this service called Grub Hub will deliver all the way out here. You-gotta-be-kiddin-me was my first reaction...
But it's true, and the service fee isn't even all that much. I'm ordering a $15 beef brisket sandwich from a hole in the wall BBQ joint (that's actually the name), and the service fee is $.83... throw in a tip for the driver, push a button and it's on the way.
And like w/ Uber you can see who's coming, where they are, and a reasonably accurate delivery time. You can literally watch the whole thing on a map...

I don't think that I have ever or would ever pay $15 for a BBQ sandwich. There had better be a whole bunch of sides with that.

Well, I would give the Grub Hub service a big thumbs up, though this experience wasn't necessarily all that great. Not GH fault though... So order to delivered in an hour, and that's all the way out here... I remembered the Hole In the Wall place sandwich as being some big heaping pile o' chow, but I either had ordered something else that time, things changed or whatever. But this sandwich is far from what I was expecting and like Thtwudbeme mentioned, certainly a disappointment at that high a price. Tasty? Yes. Worth it? No...... My driver got lost and I had to step out to the entrance and guide him in... then had a rather poor attitude about how lousy his day was going... Hmmm - spending your weekend driving around on a motorcycle when it's 40 degrees outside might do that buddy... I'll try this again some time, but go with more of a sure thing and give more explicit directions... bd

We have lived in Chicago and Milwaukee and been able to use GrubHub. It actually is an excellent service most times. And as you say if you order the right thing you’ve got several meals for one delivery charge.
NoW we live 20 miles from the honkin middle of nowhere and of course there is not a delivery service that comes this far out.

My Mom has been delivering for Door Dash and really enjoys it. She makes decent money during high volume times too.

Every BBQ place in anchorage an one seasonal truck business charges 15-18 a sandwich but the sandwich has a pound a meat to die for...the the sides half a pound of coleslaw.. Ok so it is not the viniger type I truly like but I have a bottle to doctor that. And fries or curly fries...
I could get one ask not to put it on the bread and have a meal for three when Taylor was up to 11 years old...before the open pit was Taylor's stomach.
No deliver here but in the summer the merchant does deliver pizza's to the beach about every hour. Order and wait for the truck to get to the parking lot or take what is left over as no matter how many extra the bring they sell out.

Once in a while you got to just need to "feed the beast"..... "Grub Hub".... Sounds like my kind of place...
In a little town near where I lived once there was a place called "Pops Grab it an Growl Since 1939"..... A small burger joint that looked like it hadn't been remodeled since it opened.. BEST burger place anywhere around..
Yes.. At about the early teen years, boys tend to turn into an endless empty gut... All you can do is pour it in, and it doesn't need to be fancy or special.. Just filling.. You can't deny them, they will pick your nursing home some day..

LOL I recall very distinctly that, somewhere around his 15th birthday, my son sort of pulled his chair up to the open fridge, and all I saw was the flash of him inhaling its contents.
He stayed skinny as heck for the longest time. I just stocked up on frozen pizzas, fresh fruit and veg, and popcorn. Kept him and his buddies sated for a while, anyway.

3rd party delivery services (Grub Hub, Door dash, uber eats, etc...) actually hurts small business.
3rd party charges a fee for the service.
If you call the mom and pop and do a carry out, and your bill is 30.00, they keep that 30.00 in house, assuming you tip 10% or better, the server / bartender / carry out team keeps that 3.00. It's ready for pick up pretty darn quick.
If you call a 3rd party delivery service, your bill is 30.00, the house sees about 20.00, the server/bartender/carry out kid sees zero tip, and you the customer are paying fees for the service AND a tip. You will wait so much longer because the driver will pick up 10-12 orders THEN start delivering. If yours is picked up first and dropped off last, it could sit in the car, for over an hour....and if you have items that are cold, that need to stay at 40 degrees or less to be food safe? That's a hard NOPE.
Mom and pops are dying, so I am sure it's no mistake that 3rd party orders may not be "piled high' like dine in / customer picking up.
To all of you who are supporting your local mom and pops. Thank you. Thank you so much. I know it can be a PITA to drive and pick up, but every dime stays in house when you do! Again, thank you so much for support your local restaurant!!!

laurazone5,I haven't eaten outdoors when that was possible, nor have I ordered take out, except pizza slices that I can put the oven up high, de-germ and eat. After all you said about how many hands touch the food before the customer gets it...glad I didn't take out and certainly won't now. Our Lunchonette is closing for good, been here since the 50's. They had no place for customers to dine outside and I guess take out didn't work for them. It's sad, I used to like going there for breakfast on occasion.

+++ Chuckle.... I would come home when my kids were about that age and see that behavior.. The boys would be in front of the open fridge and devour like a pack of bears.. The girls would do the same, only they would nibble.. Seems always from top to bottom, then back to the top and start over..

My oldest daughter has always been a bear of a woman. She began school as the smallest in her class and by 5th grade was the biggest, and was not particularly fat, just tall and BIG! Modeled after her great granddaddy who was way taller than 6 feet clear back in the 1800's.
By the time she was in her late teens, she had 3 sisters and one on the way, wo no way of telling where the pickup loads of food were going....just keep buying and praying the checks would not bounce...but then all of a sudden she was married and gone.
About two weeks later we noticed that the food was backing up into piles, and a shopping cart full would suffice where it had previously required a pickup truck full. We were astounded! Had NO IDEA she had been putting away that much food, and she might have been a bit chunky, but was by NO MEANS fat!
All of a sudden, feeding a family did not resemble feeding a large herd of cattle in terms of investment, and I began to breathe easier.
Not long after, she divorced and came back home, but we made it clear she needed to be self-supporting ASAP, and she complied. I dunno if she still eats by the metric ton or not, but I DO know I am not writing the checks any more, and that her long-term mate seems to be happy, as am I.....Joe

+++ Again... Chuckle... When kids reach that stage, boys or girls, all you can do is pour in the grub.. It doesn't need to be fancy or expensive, just filling..
After all... One day they will pick our nursing home...
