I've used just regular salt on motorcycle batteries with good success. Apparently it dissolves the minerals that bridge between otherwise separated plates causing them to ground out. That was many years ago when saving a few bucks for a little more life in a battery could buy some time before replacement, and I've been tempted to try it again on a couple batteries since, but opted to just replace them instead.
In short, it does work, for how long I don't know.

DH was certain that the freeze had killed the battery in the old Jeep we drive strictly here on the property, as he he'd charged it before the weather came in, but wouldn't even turn over after the freeze. Not wanting to spend $$ on a new battery, we checked w/ a local company that sells used/reconditioned batteries but they don't have any & don't know when they'll have more. So I went online looking for other sources when I found that article.
I told DH we had nothing to lose by trying & to put the charger back on the old battery. It charged all day & night and, wouldn't ya know, ol' Jeeper started this morning.
He said he's still gonna try the epsom salt technique on an old lawnmower battery. If it works, it would be good knowledge to have in hard times.
