I was reminded today of a young gent I met around 20 years ago, the 5 year old son of a long time customer. His name is/was "August", and his Dad introduced me to him as "Joe", so the lad would feel at home with me, since the kid was a real hoot when he felt at home.
He began by showing me a toy I recognized right off the bat as a practical joke. It was a phony adding machine, made in such a way as to deliver a stiff electrical shock to whoever pushed the main button.
The lad had a line of BS already memorized to get me to use the machine and get the shock, and I went along with it, then at the right moment, I pushed the button and got the shock, but did not react like I was supposed to. He took the machine back, pushed the button, shocked the crap oughta himself, winced, handed it back to me to try again. He thought that somehow the machine was not working on me, and he just needed to keep enduring the shocks until I finally got one.
We passed that machine back and forth between us for 10 or 15 minutes standing in his kitchen, each shocking himself but me never letting on until his Mom had to stop the game because she was laughing inside so hard she was near piddling herself.
At that time, I was pretty sure the kid was destined to be the biggest brat in New Mexico history other than Billy the kid, but keeping track of him online over the years, it seems like he may be destined for greatness during his adult years, which just goes to show I do not know all there is to know about raising kids....especailly other people's kids...
GO, AUGGIE!....Joe
