Seeing a lot of 500's around here nowadays. Price has gone up, but they still have a 400 4WD that lists for $4800. A pretty even handed review...

I've always held that four wheel ATVs are for people who've lost their sense of balance. Just kidding Joebill!
I used to love dirt bike trail riding, and the trails I used to ride were way too narrow for an ATV, so I'm trying to picture it as much of a sport, more for cruising around and seeing the sights it seems.

I'm trying to picture it as much of a sport, more for cruising around and seeing the sights it seems. --- --- I got the only quad I've owned after retirement.. At that it was a used, rental machine I got from my neighbors who owned the boat, atv shop.. It was a Polaris 400 size or so.. It was cheap all considered at the time... It worked well running around the farm and the occasional "lunch run, mushroom hunt" trail rides I did at the time.. Like today, even then most people would say things like you need go faster, bounce higher machinery of the time.. NOT...
Again today... We have a side by side Kubota RTV 400 "PEPE" that is more farm use oriented than trail use.. It is what we need at this time to be the most useful for our needs...
Go faster, bounce higher is fun at times.. But not all the time..
Like any market it seems the brands will find there level or change levels in the pool of available products.. Regardless of who produces the crud, the crud will settle closer to the bottom...

About 10-15 years ago the market was flooded with Chinese kid's atv's, mopeds and etc. The quality was not bad at first. You could find someone selling that stuff on every street corner. I did fix some things, then the parts took forever to get, and most repair shops quit taking that stuff in. I bet I shipped 8 kids atv's to the auction house because the customers didn't want to pick them up and pay for a 1-hour labor charge. We have a ton of polaris stuff around here because they are local. From a standpoint of repairs that I see come into my shop, I would buy a Honda, or Yamaha hands down.

You ain't wrong about THAT! Of course, we don't need any trails around here. You may have to ride around the occasional cactus, but nothing much in the way. I was looking for a great deal on a Honda, but what showed up was a Polaris for half the money it was bought for new and only 300 miles on it, so I figured hard to pass up. hard to tell it is NOT new, really. I rode my bench made tote gote into the ground and wore out several engines and tires, and I will prob'ly miss riding it sooner or later, but it was super hard on the butt, had a top speed of around 12 MPH, a number of other stuff that made it better for a 60 year old man than a 75 year old geezer. Now, when I go places, I have my own chair along, just shut off the key and relax. Hard to believe how smooth the ride is on the quad.....Joe

Of course most of the manufacturers DO make specific models for racing, on or off track....Joe

They are legal on roads here where the speed is 45mph or less AND local government does not oppose it.

As we all know, put motors on two anything and the race is on.

I can legally ride mine most places that are not paved and BESIDE paved roads. The issue with pavement is those things have locked rear ends and will not steer well on pavement, especially at higher speeds, making them more dangerous.....Joe

We have 3 little Hondas, a Recon 250, a 300 4wd and a 300 2wd. They've been trapped in the shop for a few years, but we have a guy in town going to tune them up and get them to where they start easy. That little Recon has been a hard starter since it was new.

A popular problem with ATV's is that people get drunk, steal them, ride them into the woods until they break down or run out of gas and then leave them there.
Usually, whoever owns the property they are left on speaks up and the owner gets it back, but my friend found a ROKON miles from the nearest road that had been there at least 20 years or so, and somebody had walked a gas tank in years ago and tried to repair it, given up.
IF I can get my body's undercarriage healed up, we are going to take the quad up and try dragging it to the truck, bring it down the mountain, fix it up.
The ROKON is the world's only 2 wheel drive trail motorcycle, as far as I know. BIG fun if my body will be up to the job in time....Joe

As we all know, put motors on two anything and the race is on. The Kasilof winter ice demolition race is every sat. At Decatur lake. (Shallow large frozen useless land) I was going to link a Craig listing for a souped up ice racing rig but.....it sold faster over night and its gone.
