My brother was down from WI last week to help me finish up a wood shed on our place in Romance.
We were driving back to the rental in Springfield along 60 one late afternoon. It was raining, 40 degrees, and a bit breezy. In other words, we were glad to be in the truck and not out working!
Somewhere west of Seymour I see a large figure on the right shoulder, walking west. He (?) had a backpack on, and a duffle in each hand.
Their hood was up, head down. We've all seen it a thousand times.
I cannot tell you the last time I stopped to offer a ride to someone who was hiking down the road like this. I usually have DW with me, and I am not going to put her at risk....so my habit it to just keep moving.
This time I had an overbearing feeling of pity. I asked my brother if he would mind if I offered this person a ride. He said "no problem".
There was a light ahead. At the light I turned right onto the gravel frontage road and drove back the 3/8th mile and we picked this fellow up.
He was very quiet. We learned he was going to Rogersville and his name was James.
As we made our way back up the frontage to get back on 60, there was a lady pulled over, out of her vehicle standing in the rain, waving us down.
I pulled over and she said "This is going to seem strange to you, but as I was leaving work just now I saw this fellow walking in the rain and I was just sick thinking of the misery he was in. I was fearful of picking him up, being a woman...so I prayed that God would send someone to give him a ride. And then you guys showed up".
Some might say this was all just a coincidence. But we knew that God had blessed us mightily that day. He showed us, once again, that He is, that He cares, that he wants us to trust Him and be used by Him.
I pray that God would use that little interaction to speak truth to James and that it might become a stepping stone in the building of his faith.
Thank you Father, for caring for us and for calling us out of darkness and into your marvelous light!
