Okay so Bossie is straining and not producing a calf, out comes a tail, or upon internal examination all you can feel is the calf's hindquarters and not feel the legs, classic full breech presentation.
What to do?
Easy peasy Japanesey if your arms are long enough.
Secure the cow in a stanchion or if she is lying down, no matter.
Get about a four-foot length of binder twine or quarter inch diameter rope.
On one end double the twine back against itself, take the top of the loop pass it over, around and through and you will have a non-slip loop around two inches in diameter.
Take the rope below the loop and pass about six inches through the loop.
Now you have a slip loop.
Scrub up your arm or procure a plastic bovine exam glove.
Soap or lube the cleaned (Gotta watch for bacteriological introduction into the uterus) vulva and take the slip loop and slide it over your fingers and let it stop at your thumb. This will keep it from riding up your arm while you are inside the cow/heifer.
Slide your arm in and follow the right or left leg forward until you get to the hoof.
Slide the slip loop over both toes and work it back to the dewclaws.
Make sure there is nothing between the loop and the hoof area and apply tension to draw the loop up tight.
Take the remaining twine and pass it between the toes.
It's good to have a helper at this point because while they are pulling the twine you can be guiding the hoof back to the rear of the cow/heifer.
The reason you want to pass the twine through the toes is that when you are pulling on the leg the twine will bend the hoof downward so that it does not rake the uterine wall and tear it.
You are in there to keep the leg close to the belly and make it as small as you can while the leg is being drawn back.
Once that leg is out, you repeat the procedure on the other leg.
Once both legs are out you can apply OB chains between the dew claws and hoof and assist the calf out of the cow, working with her contractions.
