I was listening to a pilot once say that as long as you don't commit the cardinal pilot sin of running out of fuel, you can land a plane anywhere you need to in an emergency.

Just so happens he used to fly gliders.

Interesting.
At the beginning of WW2, the Luftwaffe had some of the best pilots in the world. Because of restrictions from WW1, the Germans had a very large "civilian" glider program.
