It’s going to be 27°F tonight in Central Wisconsin. I have pulled pretty much all the vegetables off the vine but left the vines with here as they’re easier to pull. Normally October is our perfect month. This changed a while back maybe five years ago. We used to be able to boat on the lake where we lived well to the end of October. We have many many pictures on October 7, my daughter‘s birthday, on the lake and swimming suits. Not today !!
I had a terrible tomato harvest in the beginning with 280 plants and lost 30 of them, which is a record loss. However in the end God was great and I managed to give free tomatoes to tons of people as I always hoped to, can things, make sun-dried tomatoes etc.
Excellent broccoli year even though I had to start over. We had 90° first full week of May but we were going to Siesta Key to see my Mom after Covid.
All of my cruciferous vegetables burned out and instead should’ve been thriving. Then we had record cold. I ended up for the first time in several years having to buy starts of cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage. All three did fabulously because the weather was perfect after that. I’ve never been able to successfully glow grow cauliflower but it worked great.
Anyhow, it turned out to be a really unique here for other plans. Right now the potato harvest is good I have 24 by fours yet to pull out. I will wait and when I get them all out.
All our hummingbirds all left probably Wednesday or Thursday of last week. So I took down the feeder. We have not seen any migrating hummingbirds. I think the farmers almanac may be correct this year.

Hummingbirds here seemed to have left by second week of Sept. and not near as many as last year. They always seemed to stick around until early Oct. and I would begin to worry about them leaving as the cold was starting to arrive. Everyone around here that I talked with said about having a poor onion harvest, one lady thought it was because we had a bit of a cooler, wetter summer. Last several years fall didn't seem to make an appearance until late Nov. but it feels like this year it will arrive in Oct like it used to do when I was younger (then I didn't mind the cold, now I'm old and don't care for it at all)

The geese were gathering at the beginning of September but they haven't flown south yet. i thought it was odd they were gathering. So far the fall has been cold but the woolly caterpillars are saying normal winter so far and maybe a touch on the warm side. I'm afraid of a long miserable winter where it isn't really cold but just damp and wet. Normally we get down to the teens and maybe single digits a few times but I'm afraid of a lot of 20 to 30 weather that doesn't kill the germs like real cold weather does. And real cold weather is dry because the air can't hold moisture but the 20-30 range can be damp and miserable. Thing is one place in the nation can have one type of winter where as others can be totally different.
We are thinking Europe will get the cold blizzard weather. Kind of "don't hit a man when he is down, kick him it is easier" With their energy crunch I kind of expect them to get hit kicked really bad. Then next year will be our turn. The strategic reserves will be mostly empty, and price of oil will be high if OPEC has their way, and we will be under contract to sell LNG to Europe making prices high here, so I think next year will be our problem year.

The ONLY way to guarantee a mild winter is to get your snow removal equipment prepped. Get the winter wear all ready for use and the cars all ready for the winter. I had to go to the Menard's store to pick up a special order tonight. I just looked at wood pellet prices, $299 for a ton. I haven't bought any for two years now, and the last time I paid $229 for a ton. We used to get a free paper every weekend with the sales flyers, but not anymore. I should pick up one ton as back up for the garage this year, but not at $299.

Haven’t a clue. We’re still in mid 80s with lows of mid 40s. Next week we start dropping down to 6s & 70s, suppose it’s all downhill from there.
Hard to even think about winter. I’ve been in capris, tank tops and flip flops since I got here, haven’t even put on a long sleeve shirt yet. Got a feeling that’s not going to last much longer. One of my yearly goals is to always wear capris and flipflops until Nov. 1st…trying to convince myself summer’s not over yet…

Could be different in other places, but down here hardwood trees are pretty easy to come by and usually free. Is a lot of work, though.

There are so many geese that winter here now, what used to be the hints we could get from their behavior is pretty much out the window.A reminder, B-feather, that I'm not that far from your location. remember we had snow mid-October last year before that many leaves had fallen? Here that meant that folks' brush piles, and such leaves as they'd put by the road for the town to take to the compost, stayed right there till spring.

As to early winter, I need to pick up a new snow shovel. The plastic-bladed one I was comfortable using had gotten all jagged along the front edge, no good way to fix that, so I put it out by the street a while ago. I had hopes of seeing one at a yard sale, if maybe someone was moving south. I did find two really nice, practically new leaf rakes for $3 total.

Your post suddenly reminded me of a snowstorm in Big Timber Montana many years ago on September 19th. We were on a motorcycle ride from Dallas to Canada, and got snowed in for 3 days. The only restaurant around was a Frosty Freeze, with terrible food. They'd just cleared the highway enough for traffic to start moving again and we took off north. Rode probably 50 miles on icy roads, very slowly, at times with my feet down. But, no more Frosty Freeze burgers. The locals said that was the earliest snow they could remember.

We had our first killing frost right on zone 2 schedule about 15 September.. I'm sure we have had several since.. Our leaf color change and falling is progressing rapidly now from a slow start..
At 04;00 hours Pacific time there is whip cream fog in the yard and over the pond.. I yard light is barely visible..

Jolly, The fire marshal and Inc. company will not allow that type of heat in a commercial garage. The pellet stove is considered a appliance, so the give my a little slack on having it in the garage.

Weather has been unseasonably cool here. We might get a front in late September that cools things down for a day or two, then it's back to mid/upper 90s. Temps don't normally start staying cool until late October. This year, we had the cool front last month that cooled things down to 60s nighttime/80s daytime temps that have held for 2 weeks now. Even had a couple of nights down in the 50s. Normally, it would still be sweltering hot here, so it's been a welcome change.
Looking at the forecast for the next 2 weeks, it looks like that same pattern is going to hold. Can't say if we're gonna have an early winter but we're definitely having an early Fall.
