Beside "helping family", and keeping herself in penury, not planning 20 years ago to be debt free in 15 years was her biggest mistake. I've known some very nice people who just couldn't say no to relatives and even "friends" when they'd ask for money. It's sad, but some people just haven't learned to say "sorry, but I just can't help even though I'd like to". Relatives who know mama/aunt/cousin is a soft touch make their own poor decisions knowing that soft touch is a sure backup. They'll buy a new car every two years, then ask for help paying their electric bills. Bailing them out isn't helping them, it's enabling them to continue making poor decisions.

In my neighborhood....pops drove up in a fancy new motorhome. Son had to sell his old MH to pay for drugs. Son got violent with pops. I am guessing pops sold his home or apartment to buy this rig. I heard pops crying for help. But son was there as well as another big man. Son was in a mood .......the motorhome is now his. When you are old and not much strength what you going to do. This is just another way a person can lose possession .

That blanket hid his 38 Smith. Those boys reformed.

Smart man...somehow for some reason unknown...I doubt the old man ever used a gun. Although G was most of 40.years in service if he had guns he doesn't use them. He is a big man and apparently there are locks on the doors inside.

The article doesn’t give a lot of info except she “helped her family.” Frankly I hear that and “I was just too good to others” as an excuse from friends who did no planning and were not frugal. I cannot imagine having a mortgage and a car note at 74. She will never be able to stop working. Best way to help others is to help yourself so they don’t have to take care of you later.

Are you ready to retire?, follows some very simple parameters. But as in many things simple, the execution can be hard.
1. You must not have a mortgage. 2. You must not have a car note. 3. You must not have credit card balances. 4. You must have a budget. You have to know where your money is going. 5. You must have healthcare. 6. You must assess your housing as to what you need and can maintain. 7. You should have both savings and investments, in addition to your Social Security. 8. Understand that you may spend more money per year in the first 36 moths after retirement. Plan for it. 9. You must have a reason to get up in the morning. Part-time job, hobby, volunteer, craft business, whatever. 10. You don't have to act your age, but you do have to understand it. Those smiling 75 year-olds climbing mountains in the commercials are actors. Actors lie for a living.
