They're all around! It blows my mind how many deer I see while I'm just driving down the dirt road to the pavement. I want all those Bambi-types out of here, and they can take their vile meningeal worms with them.
Once Nick and his dad get their bucks, we have friends coming over to help thin things out. We've had two does contract m. worm, and almost lost one.
Anyone else have plans once gun season starts?

Rifle season here is only 8 days long, but we do have archery and muzzleloader seasons. I'll get my Savage .270 sighted in before season starts, and I know I need to work with the BP rifle.

We could get the friends to bring their children for youth season, but I want the goats and sheep to be able to browse a while longer.
I'm not too into going out and waiting for the deer to walk in front of my gun, so I'm good with staying back at home base to make food and keep the fires burning.

Oh. we discovered an "issue" with deer season.
Our regular butcher won't process our sheep until January. THat means we'll have to do it ourselves.

Got the chance to sight my rifle in yesterday before the storm showed up. I set a full aluminum beer bottle up at 100 yards, and first shot exploded it. Second shot, I couldn't really see much but a bit of white, and I grazed it with that shot. I'm calling it sighted in and not gonna mess with it

He was working on his drinking problem. Got it straightened out on the first shot, no more problem.

Yeah, I've had years when we get the hay unloaded, things settle down, and I call the butcher in say October, and get reminds they won't take anything but deer til January!

I've got two buddies that we give permission to come out and hunt on dad's properties.
They came out early and set and re-set a couple stands and on the first day of firearm (shotgun)
season, the one guy decides to forego the stand and went over to a hill that overlooks a meadow
that is a main crossing site, placed his 5 gallon bucket upside down on the ground, sat his butt
down and less than an hour later, I hear 2 shots. He'd nailed a 7 point buck thru the top of his
neck, the slug had then run down his insides and he'd dropped in his tracks. Apparently the first
shot missed him entirely, but when he turned to investigate (instead of running), it was all over...BANG!
They've been out a couple times since, seen deer, but they've been hanging over on the neighbor's property
and haven't come over while the hunters are on site. Cleaned out their bait pile a couple times during the
night, but stay a safe distance away during the daytime. Except for the first guy.....we paced off the killing
shot and it was nearly 86 yards with a rifled barrel, scope and sabot slug. About 150# dressed out in the field.

We sent five of our goats out to get processed, and didn't get what we paid for. Over 400lbs standing weight, so not large by any means, but all butcher ready for their size. Got less than 100lbs dressed out. Our plan is to process ourselves from now on. Need to teach the kids anyway, so it'll work out better for us. Still need to get a grinder, so no deer for us this year.

Goats are easy, and we've always done our own sheep, too. Just thought we'd see what the cuts were supposed to be like. Did you talk to the butcher on what you got back? MisterG,

My friends came back out late this afternoon, while I was still in town, and it was getting towards twilight, as I turned in onto my long driveway. About midway back, the path dips down towards a valley on the other side and I happened to see a young doe yearling, run from right to left across the pathway in front of me and so I immediately slowed down and then stopped, as I knew there would be others to follow. Sure enough, I'd no sooner stopped, than a much larger doe leaped across in front of the front of the vehicle about 50 feet ahead. I then quickly looked up on the hill and saw my buddy stand up from his stand, aim quickly and then a boom and flash of light emerged from the barrel of the shotgun. I waited for about 30 more seconds and then continued up the roadway to my house. I walked back a short time later and asked if he'd got her, as I couldn't see if she'd dropped from my location, and he mentioned that just before I'd come off the main road, he'd shot at two others; one being the yearling previously mentioned, but that he didn't think he'd hit either of them. We then went looking for the last doe which he knew had been hit, as he'd heard her bellowering and found her blood trail and where she'd run for another 150 feet or so. So now both guys have had success on the place this year. And I'm sure that they're going to get more before the season ends.

MisterG, I just chalked it up to another lesson learned. I have such a short fuse, I didn't want it to turn into an argument/battle I couldn't prove. In years past I would have, but I've been working on not blowing my top at everything and everyone. My better half has been a big help with this and it has done good things for my blood pressure.

I have never eaten venison and told him to save me a small piece. We live in PA and it's getting so built up around here, the deer are now in backyards instead of the woods. My brother said he doesn't see that many at all (he has a small place in the Poconos) and that the last few years the hunting hasn't been that good.
