Talked to an old friend today. He's been farming with his dad and by himself, since he could reach the clutch pedal on a tractor. Not counting working with his dad, he'll plant his 51st spring crop this year.
I asked him, "James are you ever going to retire?" .
His answer, "You rest, you rust. I hope when I die, they have to haul my body out of the field."
Nothing like an old farmer...

Chuck Holton always said he’ll rest when he’s dead.👍🏻

Some days it's oh so tempting to sell the flock, cut down on birds, and take life a bit easier. But no, taking care of our animals and birds is what we do, and do well. When I can't carry a 50# bag of feet, haul a bale out to the feeders, I'll think about it.

I’ve always known that since my mother told me when I was young why she walked every day since she was in her 30’s. It was simple, “you sit too much & you rust up!” My mother walked with her walker & her aide up & down her street still after two strokes. She was then 92 years old.
If it was raining she’d go into her cottage out back to ride her stationary bike, dance and listen to her Polka records , Harry Belafonte or Elvis.😊

Ozarks Tom, I pray that day is a long time coming for both of you. That said, if you haven’t already, I hope the two of you sit down and discuss what you’d do if you lost your spouse or suddenly had a crippling medical event. Such things don’t always happen gradually where you can downsize as needed. And what can be easily handled by two can suddenly become overwhelming or impossible for one. We all need to prep for those situations none of us want to think about.
