Just bought 2 of these, 40# size with Gamma lids, not sure whether to keep or return. For storing pet food but supposed to be safe for people food as well, which would be great. I have a couple concerns. 1. They have a strong plastic/chemical smell. The company says washing, then leaving outdoors a few days with the lid off will get rid of the smell. I’ve read quite a few reviews, a few say that was enough to get rid of the odor, others have gone through numerous cleaning processes and have left them outdoors a fairly long time, and they STILL smell. Even if it’s food safe, I don’t want to store human or dog food in something that’s going to cause the food to taste or smell bad. 2. They’re supposed to be stackable. I’ve seen some of the 60# containers bulge out when just one was stacked on another. Anyone have any experience with them either as pet food or people food containers? My other thought was to store gardening supplements, etc in them. But I could buy large trash cans that would probably work as well for half the price. Attachment Deleted

solargeek , thank you. But how can they advertise them as BPA free, food safe containers? See below…they show them used for human food storage, and say that they can be used by farmers, home brewers, preppers, etc. 😧 I’d been debating for some time about buying some, then when I read they were totally food safe for human use I decided to give them a try. I’ll return them Monday. content.petmate.com/academy/vittles-vault-the-best-storage-containers-to-keep-your-bulk-foods-goods-fresh/*So what’s the difference between HDPE and PE? These are supposed to be from HDPE, and FDA approved. I’m confused.

Also they are only stackable if they are empty. Do NOT stack them full. They collapse and never are the same. The lid is real booger to turn afterwards. They are also a pain to refill and clean stacked up. I had originally planned our pantry for these when we were building the new house. Glad we learned the hard way early on rather than the really hard way after everything was built.

These are supposed to be from HDPE, and FDA approved. I’m confused. It is confusing! This is because before they knew about “Endocrine disruptors” and things that affect especially female reproductive & endocrine systems, they approved all of these “safe” packaging units. Yes it’s BPA free. In the end BPA won’t kill you. An endocrine disruptor could. It takes decades to get the approval repealed. Monsanto hung on for over 25 years with PCBdin so many products. Look at glyphosate /Round up. Again Monsanto! Everyone still using it. It is not banned. We know that harm is causing both to us the seeds and the animals that eat them and we who eat the animals and the products from the seeds. I don’t mean to be a Debbie downer all the time but this is what I did for a living and it’s always so frightening. The things I found out some of which I’m allowed to talk about some of which I can’t are horrifying. Things we eat, and take a look at the new stuff that they found out about plastics and water bottles. It’s the same stuff that they make those disposable water bottles i.e. all the big brands. They’re estimating we get 100,000 pieces microscopically of plastic breaking down in those bottles when we drink the water. I just finished being disgusted with that!

TxGal, thanks. I just tried stacking the 2 containers (empty) and the top one just topples over repeatedly. My DD had some of these containers for dog food, the 60 pounders, and the bottom one warped and would never close right.

solargeek, I can imagine how difficult your job would be. I don’t see it as being a Debbie Downer…more like Paul Revere getting the warning out. 😁 I don’t get overly concerned about some of these things simply because there’s not much I can do to change things. I’d be stressed out all the time. But I do try to pay attention to the dangers and make changes to protect our family whenever possible.

SiL had one for storing dog food in for his dog, not sure about the size. I found the container a bit unhandy, seems like it would be difficult to clean good. So when I got my dog I went to home depot and got food grade 5 gallon buckets and the gamma lids that fit them. A 50 lb bag of dog food fills both buckets, and they can be stacked on top each other with no problems. I think I paid around $17/set (bucket and lid) for them.
