One of my kids lives right on the Oregon coast where everything molds, seemingly within minutes.🙁 She’s interested in making sourdough breads and has an established starter someone gave her. Not sure what form it’s in…dried, frozen or what. Anyway, she’s concerned that while making or even maintaining the starter, it will mold while it’s setting out. Anyone have any experience with this?

Sourdough bread I have made does not mold. Yeast bread can and will mold quickly. However I know Oregon is damp on the coast and I will not say it won't. If it does it won't as quick as yeast.

wildhorseluvr, I leave my starter out for a couple days pretty much every time I feed it which is usually every other Monday. It's covered but not sealed. I take starter out of the fridge, let it kinda come to room temp, feed it, let it sit overnight, put back in fridge the next day. I like my starter active when I put it back in the fridge and have it slow down doing its thing. And the bread will mold given enough time, but even living here in a rather high humidity area I can get at least a week out of it. I just store it in a brown paper bag. Hope this helps, ~~sD

p.s. wildhorseluvr , by coincidence Townsends posting this video on sourdough just this morning. They are re-doing some of their older content - the original was better me thinks: I don't like this guys vidz so much since it seems like he gets paid by the word, not the content... yak yak yak - it gets relevant when he starts mixing stuff. "Sourdough Bread: Strange Food Preservation" Original series: "Understanding Bread. What Makes It Rise?: 18th Century Breads, Part 4." and "Sourdough from Leaven - 18th Century Breads, Part 5" I've done this saving of a dough ball in salt and it works fine. Takes a while to get going again but it can be done. First sourdough I made out here was from a 2 year (at least) stored dough. And for giggles, the entire playlist: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLD1F368B5848077C3~~sD

BrewDaddy, thanks so much, that does help. I’ll forward the videos to DD, and since I’m also wanting to get back into making sourdough soon, I’ll watch them as well. Used to make sourdough frequently but kind of got out of it for a number of years. I’m hungry for some sourdough pancakes with boysenberry syrup…a family favorite. Much appreciated!
