Sometimes it isn’t even clear to whom we are giving back, making it easier to pick our pockets for any reason at all. The implicit assumption, of course, is that the services of a school, community, or organization were free; and that they gave us what we own and thus enjoy a right to our wealth or property. This phrase enjoys uncritical acceptance among everyone from corporate types to school volunteers, many of whom have come to regard community organizations as quasi-religious entities. In this way, giving back is even more virtuous, a bit like a cultural tithe. Like the “grateful” heart of an atheist, this sort of giving back specifies no particular person responsible for the material success that is now being involuntarily redirected towards communal use. more at link

Never, ever, assume that those who smile at you while demanding your empathy have your best interests in mind.
I'm certainly not a psychologist, but I'd guess right behind fear, empathy is the second most effective driver of emotions. People without the ability of critical thinking, and rely on emotions for their decisions, vote a certain way.

A number of years ago I watched an interview with a newly crowned black celebrity in some field or another who was willing to be honest about the pressure he got from those in the HOOD he had left behind.
Everybody he had ever known while growing up was hitting him up for money or other perks and telling him he OWED them, somehow, so he tried to explain how he could not afford to carry the whole housing project;
"You guys have to try and understand my position! Yeah, I am making good money now, but I also have to maintain my lifestyle and my image or it will all go away. I gotta live in a very expensive place, wear the best clothing I can find, party in the expensive clubs and pay a publicist to make sure I get my picture taken there and get my name in the paper every week. Those high=end starlets I date to maintain my reputation will not settle for a burger and fries, either, and then to top it all off my business manager insists that I make huge monthly payments for my 401K !."
The guy he was trying to explain all of this to asked him "What kinda car is a 401K?" ....Joe
