Did y'all know this??
DO I HAVE A CHOICE IN WHETHER TO JOIN ONE OR NOT?
Yes. However, some states force you to pay a fee if you’re not in the union in order to continue to work there. The states that require you to do this include:
Alaska
California
Connecticut
Delaware
Hawaii
Illinois
New York
Ohio
Oregon
Pennsylvania
Rhode Island
Washington
Wisconsin
Many teachers say that they feel pressure from other teachers to join a union. As a new teacher, don’t be afraid to ask other teachers about their experience with their union. But do your own research and determine for yourself whether or not you want to join.

I'm may be wrong, but I think the Supreme Court said nobody has to pay union dues if they don't want to.

What's amazing is how long this remained "legal" - UNTIL someone refused and took it to court. That's what I remind people of when they shrug off a law, policy, rule or regulation. You have to fight for your rights, you have freedom but it isn't exactly "free". A good example is the 6th Amendment. It was clearly written as a right but never enforced for almost 200 years until a derelict bum in 1963 finally forced the issue. Fortunately there IS a good use for stubborn, contrary, belligerent people in this world and we thankful they still exist among us. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gideon_v._Wainwright
