They're only shooting themselves in the foot with people who pay attention, the people who get their information from CNN/MSNBC/ABC/NBC/CBS/NPR only see the snippets that mention "bloodbath" and the news reader's twisted explanations will believe he was threatening civil war.
Unfortunately, that's a very big swath of America.
