My green beret bud used those all over Afghan as it was the only helo that could operate at the altitude and carry an A team with their gear. Glad to see they are getting new life and get to keep competing with the B-52 for most aged warrior status.

Can't count the times I've flown in a CH-47. Loading jeeps/3/4 ton truck with trailers into those birds can be a real challenge, not much clearance on either side and always a very nervous crew chief. Glad to see they're not being scrapped in favor of some high-tech new play toy. The old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies here. Of course the military's motto is "if it ain't broke, fix it until it is" is the usual order of the day. I hope that's not the case here.
The one drawback to the Chinook as compared to other helicopters is the inability to "auto-rotate" to the ground if the motor quits. With a Chinook, the motor is in the back and when the blades stop turning it goes in like a spike.
