I am picking up a 1949 Ford 8N that I traded for Sunday. It needs a starter bendix and the new carburetor needs adjusting. While starting the carburetor adjustments, the bendix went bad. The owner obtained another tractor with a loader and gave up on the Ford. I have traded a 9 month old steer and 4ewe lambs born in December and January for the tractor. Time will tell if it was a good trade.
I was wondering if there might be anyone with knowledge about these tractors that might be willing to offer advice or answer questions once I get it home.

Thanks Jim. I know where to get the bendix now. Hopefully won't need to many other parts but it is a great source.
I'll watch the videos soon.

nchobbyfarm, I've gotten every part I've needed for mine from these folks - www.just8ns.com/When I replaced the clutch & pressure plate on mine I was surprised to see a centering tool included in the box.

Thanks Ozarks Tom, a local connection. Shelby is a couple hours west.

Changing out the charging system is a popular mod. I ordered a alternator and bracket for a customer last year, from a place out of California IIRC.

Thanks guys. The conversion was started by the previous owner. He had also replaced the gas tank, distributor, plugs and wires. But the starter bendix went bad before he could complete the carb adjustments.
I used a button with clamps to jump the battery straight to the starter to confirm it spins but doesn't engage the flywheel. Now I have to decide to try a rebuild or buy a new starter. I'm leaning toward buying a new one but will have to wait for the extra funds.
I'm not sure if the 12 volt conversion is correct or there is a bad ground wire. The starter button nor the one on clamps would spin the starter until I moved the ground wire around. I am getting a new ground wire and replace it and then start tracing wires per the diagrams I have obtained online.
I'm afraid it will be a longer project than I had hoped but time will tell.

You do know the cylinders are sleeved, don't you? We bought a set of steel sleeves for a rebuild sometime around 1970. That tractor doesn't burn a drop of oil still today. I don't know if steel sleeves are still available but if I were planning on keeping an 8n I'd be looking into getting a set just in case they would no longer be available at some point. Wade

nchobbyfarm, Just a thought, but you might pull the starter and see if anything is restricting the gear from advancing to the flywheel. Years ago I bought a 39 Studebaker that had been store in a barn for years. The starter wouldn't engage, so I pulled it and found a big mud dauber nest in it. Cleaned it out and worked fine.

Wade Wade, I appreciate the heads up on the sleeves. I will look into it once I get it running and see what all it needs. I will have to prioritize the items.

Not sure but was the 8n a positive ground if so changing to 12v it should become negative ground also would need a resistor for coil and points I have seen many 6v starters work years on 12v provided they start easy. Sounds like someone has confused the wiring more than needing parts yo me anyway.
The truck I just fixed up for the wife all things I knew someone had worked on I redid them to make sure they knew what they were doing, good thing as they should take their tools back to the store and buy fishing gear.
