Found this video whilst hunting about for kitchen ideas. Sure, it's old, but it's also cool and has some good suggestions. .

Dies anyone recognize the jig she is using at 7:32? It's like a 1940's Seal-a-Meal.

Do you know what it's called or (crossing fingers) do you still have it, or a close up picture of it? That thing is just too cool for school!

That thing is just too cool for school! Unfortunately that was 15 years ago, and I don't remember. I think my oldest aunt got that, because she had memories of using it with my Grandma. I can ask her about it the next time I talk to her, I think she's on vacation in Maine this week.

We collect antiques, esp. Kitchen antiques. I have never seen those tip out potato bins. But I do remember something like a door in the kitchen wall for garbage to go out like under the garbage hole in the countertop; in my grandmothers house. She lived in a grand old brick house in Oak Park, her kitchen was the best! Huge walk in Pantry, she kept gallon jars filled with honey and cheezee-the beginnings of my homesteading ways.

@pony,Are you building a new kitchen? Is there something specific you are looking for? Lately I have been looking up primitive and 20's 30's kitchens. I am redoing the kitchen in the log cabin and am ripping out everything (newer junk). Found a old sink on craigslist ,the ones with the built in drain board on each side. Separate pieces ,like china cabinet, Hoosier , even an oak ice box. I'd like to have it converted to elec or gas if possible. But I do have access to dry ice-just need to experiment. Craigslist has had some kitchen units, sink stove reffer cupboards all in one, they seem to be from early 50's.

At this point, I am excited that Nick is going to jack up the foundation when he gets home. We got an old sink years ago at a demolition sale, and we've hauled it through 3 states. It looks like this one, only mine is white and doesn't have any chips: I'm looking forward to having a decent sink. The one we have now is functional, but it's pretty sad looking and not at all big enough.

@pony, Saw a pic. of a jadite green on pinterest! Hard to belive the prices on some of these. I waited until a real good deal popped up and sent hubby to get it right after work. By the time he got there the guy found out what a mistake he had made! The floor in the cabin will soon be jacked up, I got the jack and ready to hop in the car! Someone had cut thru the floor joist right under the stairs to make an access hole , the whole weight of the stairs is on that 1 joist. You got to go arround where they mix paint, buy the oops paint. Such bargains I've found!

Not much space to store many goodies, but if I come across something, I snag it and try to cram it in somewhere.

Okay, you asked for it, my 1940's kitchen here is a tour... Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAttachment DeletedWe have a spice cupboard, and stoves, then the next picture shows the mixing center, with flour bin below, drawer for thin pans, thin drawers, a cutting board that slides out which we use for working dough, cupboards above hold baking supplies. Cupboards below sink for cleaning supplies and garbage, the next picture shows another cutting board, cupboards above for dishes, and the small desk in the corner where we keep the recipe books, the telephone was originally where the microwave is now, the drawers under the microwave for towels and wash cloths and such, in the corner the drawers below hold instruction books and the wax paper, plastic wrap, canning lids and rings on to the next post for more pictures....

Attachment DeletedNotice the Ironing board built into the wall, and in the corner you can just catch the freezer that I use for a refrigerator run on solar power. Next picture shows the pantry and refrigerator run on grid power, and the last picture is a different angel. We have many of the features of the kitchen in th video, like double sink thin drawers as well as larger drawers. When Grandpa built the kitchen he measured the counter tops to my mother's height so they would be at her perfect height. He built it in the late 40's. As far a bins under the upper counters for flour and sugar, in our house they'd have bugs and ants in them if we did that.

I need to build a frame and skin for the old sink I have. My regular sink is at 33" (too high) and a Hoosier is at 30 1/2" I'm 5'2". At the cabin I'm removing everything and having only antique separate cabinets.

7thswan, my understanding is that you stand up, drop your arms down straight in front of you, and bend your elbows at 90°. That is the height that causes the least strain.
