A fun book about what happens to people's bodies after they die. For example Eva Peron ended up stashed in an attic, stashed in a truck, shipped to Spain, shipped back, after about 20 years finally got buried and in still pretty good condition. Any number of saints and monks and such ended up having their bones scattered across the world as church relics. Christopher Columbus is probably both buried in the new world as well as the old. Some of his bones are in the Caribbean and some back in Italy. The book is filled with such morbidly fascinating stories. This is what happens when your daughter is a writer, all the strange things she needs to research.

Many don't know that Dr. William Mayo grave robbed the body of Cut Nose an Indian hung for involvement in an uprising. Cut Nose's skeleton was used in the Mayo Clinic for years and was eventually returned to the Dakota tribe and buried. (not in the book)

I believe he was hung along with 18 other Indians in Mankato MN. They weren't real picky about finding the culprits who did the killing of the homesteaders, just rounded up whatever Indians they could find and hung them. There was a plaque in Mankato on the site of the mass hanging, but it didn't give much background.

Many don't know that Dr. William Mayo grave robbed the body of Cut Nose an Indian hung for involvement in an uprising. Cut Nose's skeleton was used in the Mayo Clinic for years and was eventually returned to the Dakota tribe and buried. (not in the book) That reminds me of this interesting bit of history, except that this story is more well known, especially in Edinburgh, Scotland, where the bodies supplied were very fresh indeed. Burke's punishment for providing very fresh bodies to the medical establishment was, as directed by the court of law, to be executed (hanged), dissected, and put on permanent display. Burke's skin pocket book. When the notorious murderer, William Burke, was found guilty and hanged in 1829, his body was publicly dissected in the University of Edinburgh's medical school, and his skeleton still hangs there for students to observe. His skin was made into various items, including this pocket book. The pocket book is currently on display in the Surgeons' Hall Museum. The skeleton of William Burke.
