When my sis and I were only little whippers Mom used to read to us nightly from either a serialized book from the Saturday Evening post or a hardback she had scored somewhere. Ralph Moody's "Little Britches" series was about an 8 year old boy who had moved from New Hampshire to a ranch in Colorado with his father in 1906 and grew up there. The whole family, Dad included, was spellbound as long as she kept reading nightly, and if she had not ruled with iron in her voice we might never have gotten to bed.
This evening I just discovered that not only could I download it from the local library through Amazon for nothing, but the same applies to thousands of more books. Only need a local library card. It all worked so fast I am unsure where I started, but should not be too hard to figure out if anybody is interested.
Maybe google "download book from local library" and see where it takes you. As far as I am concerned, the Kindle is the perfect way to read, but most ebooks cost as much on Amazon as paperbacks.
I am going to keep that thing hot from now on.
I also want to point out that anyone interested in historical action fiction books, mostly about places like Africa and Australia should take a look at those written by Wilbur Smith. I'll just leave it at that.....Joe

I gotta say that after reading the first "little britches" book and getting into the second one, I fully realize how very good they are and how every single kid should read them or have them read to them. Cannot exactly describe the style and it changes from one part to another so no point, but If I am steering anybody wrong I will be happy to issue a refund for this free advice.... One of many smiles; The man of the family had passed away from lung sickness and the woman with a whole house full of children was depending on the boys making money working hard every day also had a secret. She was due to deliver a child 6 months after the passing of her husband. Kids had no idea it was coming. When the baby was delivered, she called the kids in to "meet your sister", and one young boy asked "how do you know it's a sister?" She told him "see? the hair parts RIGHT down the middle. No doubt it is a girl"...….Anyhow, I can testify that the first two books are solid gold and I betcha Ralph Moody got nothing but better as he went along. It is a long series, Ralph Moody author, first book titled "little britches"......Joe
