Today, I read that there is going to be a pork shortage, due to some strange, new, and exotic pig disease called Swine Fever.
I find it very interesting that this Swine Fever coincides with the bottom falling out of the pork market. Lots of the folks around here who used to grow hogs have stopped doing so, because it cost more to grow it than they could get at market.
But that's just me. I also thought it suspicious that, when coconut oil sales were flagging, it suddenly became a superfood, able to cure all your ills.
A plague of epic proportions is ripping through the global pig population, and CNBC is warning that this unprecedented outbreak of African swine fever “could lead to significant shortages” of pork in the global marketplace. As you will see below, the price of pork has already risen 38 percent over the last 4 weeks, and it appears inevitable that it will go a lot higher as this crisis continues to intensify. When the first case of African swine fever was reported in China last August, nobody was really too concerned at the time. But since then it has been spreading like wildfire, and the most recent estimates of the spread of the disease that we are getting from the experts are absolutely terrifying.

To be on the safe side, I stopped at Shetler's today and picked up 10 pounds of bacon on sale for $1.99.

$1.99 is a steal! My last haul was at $2.89...picked up 10 pounds as well, and some kielbasa and sausage.

Talking to a neighbor who raises cattle the other day, he was saying he's stopped looking in the meat cases when he goes to the store, otherwise he might go postal.
It would be interesting to learn how an African swine disease would spread to China, you'd think China would have a quarantine period for animals like every other country.
This subject probably does belong in Area 52.

I recall a "swine flu" some decades ago. Gotta wonder if it is the same thing, if, that is, it exists.....Joe It's worse. Swine flu is basically just a bad flu that has jumped from pigs to humans. H1N1 was the outbreak strain about ten years ago. I had two pigs at the time, named them H1 and N1. I think the 1918 human flu pandemic was somehow related to H1N1 also. Now that strain is one of the ones in the flu shots they want us all to get, but I've never gotten one. I don't think I've ever had the flu in my life, certainly never anything like what people describe it feeling like...maybe I'm just tougher than most. This African Swine Fever is a nasty thing, kind of like ebola. No threat to humans, at least not yet. The only issue is if it wipes out a lot of hogs like it's doing elsewhere, raising prices. No idea if it's as big a threat as they're making it out to be, but it sounds pretty bad. Seems to me it wouldn't raise prices if it hit here, though, since nearly everyone would stop buying pork out of unfounded fear that it's going to make them sick.
