The 'purist' in me likes to use lump charcoal, but I often seem to burn too hot. Maybe that's just a matter of experience since I've only used it a couple dozen times.
Briquets give me finer control of temperature and I seem to be able to set up my heat zones a lot easier.

I use a mix of the two, but I buy a brand of briquets that doesn't use chemicals.
