Well, you can call me crazy...but hunting Cape Buffalo in wild Africa has been a dream of mine for 50 years. Ever since reading about the "black death of Africa" as a boy, I have wanted to track these beasts. The dream became reality in August, in Zimbabwe. I took this bull on the 6th day of my safari. I spent the next 6 days tracking and trying to get a shot on a particularly old Eland bull. I took my safety off once, but took no shot! The Eland and I both won!

Glad you achieved your dream. That's a really huge animal, and that's no pea shooter you're holding. Are you having it mounted?

The cape is being tanned. We will decide what to do with the hide and horns once they are here. Might need the money for drilling a well! The rifle is a bit of a monster...450 Dakota. 550gr bullet loaded to just a hair under 2,200 fps. I could have loaded it faster, but the bullet manufacturer says max impact velocity of 2,200. Here is a pic of an unfired bullet, and the one recovered from the bull.

Well, we may call you crazy, but not for making your dream come true. What happens to the meat? And you need to put a "regular" bullet, like a 9mm or a .38, next to that bad boy so I can get a better idea of scale. Congratulations! Sounds like you had a grand time!

I'd be curious to see that comparison too.... But, not to steal tarbe 's thunder, but he shot a 550 gr bullet, whereas a typical .357 magnum is 158 gr. So imagine that if you will.... That 550 is a BIG hunk o' lead going down range... bd

All of the meat is eaten. Most of it goes to the protein-starved locals.

Woof! That is a big honkin' hunk of metal and powder!
And cool about the meat. I just didn't know if you had to can it all up there, gave it to the locals, or put it on dry ice and shipped it back to the States.
