For years, LDWF has been telling us we no longer have panthers. Ain't none.
Well, a family in our community went to feed their mare yesterday morning and found her dead in the pasture, claw and bite marks on her back and neck. I don't know if she was partially eaten or not. Anyway, they called LDWF and they sent a game Warren and a biologist. The biologist determined the wounds were caused by a big cat.
Gee, that's either a heckuva bobcat or Superman's tomcat, since we have no panthers...

We do not have cougars here in Pennsylvania. That is what the Pennsylvania Game Commission tells us. They also tell us that we are in big trouble if we shoot one.
Three years ago on Thanksgiving day I saw a half grown one. Three days later a neighbor informed me that there was another report of a sighting on the same morning. I was able to contact that man and we shared information. Then I got on google maps and measured the distance between the sightings. Distance was 2 miles and sightings were 75 minutes apart.
I did not call the Game Commission because they are too devious.
We do have Bobcats .... there is a big difference.

We have bobcats, and we have mountain lions. I have seen both. (We also have large bears, but that's another story.)
DNR will tell you that we don't have a mountain lion problem. They stopped saying we don't have mountain lions because they couldn't keep saying, "We don't have mountain lions. Don't shoot them when you see them."

Nobody claims we don't have mountain lions, and you can buy a tag to shoot one, if you can get one to cooperate....Joe

A friend of mine called the sheriff to report a panther was sitting in her pasture. He was not a bit worried and just sat there. Sheriff told her she was the third one that week that reported a sighting. Make sure you carry a gun when being outside.

The last guy in charge of local forest service and his wife went out to dinner, idiot left his gun at home.
When they got out of the truck upon returning, mountain lion attacked the wife, sank it's teeth into her breast and would not let go even with the guy beating it on the head. He had to go inside, get his pistol, shoot it to get it loose.
FS said it was somehow sick and starving. Small consolation.....Joe

Here they say there are no female mountain lions.... They also say if you shoot one, you have to give them the pelt. If I shoot one they can do their own skinning.
I do not know where where they give birth but those cubs should be born now or very close to time.

I guess the statute of limitations has to be over with a long time ago, so I will relate the following story without any names.
A male friend always got a mountain lion tag yearly so if he saw one on a deer hunt he would be ready. He had his boy with him, the boy just nailed his deer for the year, the man walked over to where the boy and the deer were, looked around, saw a mountain lion standing less than 200 yards away, nailed it shooting offhand. Lion flipped over into a stand of Manzanita and they started to approach, but heard the lion screaming, and if you have ever heard one, you know what it does to the hair on the back of your neck, but that's another story.
Now, it is stalking something that can hurt or kill somebody, but the man decided not to send his son away. They have always been good shooters, and I dunno if he was confidant or just did not want to cheat the boy out of the experience of a lifetime. Cat was still screaming bloody murder and they were advancing through the brush with extreme caution, safeties off.
All of a sudden, the boy saw something move slightly on the flank, turned and mounted his rifle. What he saw was the FEMALE half of the pair of lions, furious, ready to pounce. Everybody froze for a count of 3 or so,; the lion screamed again, the boy thought he could see the lion gather it's muscles for the 6 foot leap and did not wait any longer. nailed it in the face, killed dead as a hammer.
Only one tag between them, so one pelt was a waste, and nobody ever talks about that lion hunt to this day, about 10 years later. Boy was maybe 14 at the time, and I would gladly place my life in his hands still today.....Joe

story about 15 or so years old.
Rural. Man and wife come home, find every door of the house open, the sister in law dead on the lawn. the man overreacts and shoots the dogs. Police claim, dog attack. Neighbor notices footprints and says that is not a dog. He has plaster of paris and makes casts. the law of the land says a) there are no lions, and b) if you shoot one you pay a big fine. (so what is it) the local law did not want to look at the casts. Case closed, it is the dogs. The Zoo in Memphis identified the casts as lion. So the woman was killed by dogs and the man did not have to pay a few grand. Or so it goes.
